I've noticed that the last couple of challenges (Garbage and Shutter Speed) that I've received high marks from commenters and voters with cameras. However, I've seemed to average a mere 3.5 from users with no cameras.

I'm confused. Why such the variance in the votes? And IMHO, this has prevented me from cracking the top 10. What's going on here?

they obviously dont hang out in the forums enough. You never know what you might sneak a peek of here ;)

Maybe it's a conspiracy Rikki. The cameraless think that if some people get low enough scores, then they will sell their gear for cheap ! then they won't be cameraless any more :-P

Actually, now that I've reviewed things again, it's the top 20 that always gets slammed!

For people with no cameras, that takes a lot of balls to score someone low when all they do is score. Give me your best shot I tell those folks ;) If our scores really deserve a score of 3 so be it but prove to me that you're a master at photography.

Maybe they only shoot film and really are master photographers.

Then again; maybe some of the "Cameraless" has a film camera.

Sorry for the interuption, on with the why my photo didn't do better challenge thread....

I think you're mistaken here. My point is why the variance in the votes from users with and without cameras.

To be fair, you DID say this: "And IMHO, this has prevented me from cracking the top 10. What's going on here?" I'll confess to being surprised; not the sort of thing you usually say... But then, this IS a rant so....

Peace, brother :-)

I know :( The past few challenges has just been roller coaster rides which I don't seem to understand. Typically after about 150 votes you get an idea where you'll be in the field but that hasn't happened to me at all. Just flustered I guess.

Maybe it's time to take a back seat and watch things go by. But then again, who can live without the "dreaded" update button :D

I've gone without it over a year, and I'm honestly afraid to get it back...

See that's exactly what I don't understand :(

Honestly, this thread was a mere question with my brutally frank statement. I just scratch my head sometimes and wonder.

I personally do not like the idea of everybody voting on images, there shall be a committee of some 5 people, whom we understand have great anderstanding of the challenge and the photography. Having said this, the participation of people shall also be important. So i think i will go with current format.
Why i do not think it is a good idea, because, the voting is very subjective, that means , if lot of people think your picture do not meet the challenge constraints, they will vote it off (in really it meets the rules). For example, every landscape could not be secnery, but the picture is well valid for landscape challenge. I got lot of comments that the pic i submitted is not landscape (just because it was not scenery .. but was perfectly landscape). Or another example, single light source competition , if the voter thinks your image shall not have the artificial light source in the image (where as i think i is perfectly all right, and there might be other people who think otherwise).

there is another thing, how do we know that all the people honestly vote, i mean when i get some average score, i can give other pictures (those look better than mine) score below than what i got.

but i guess this is all part of game. Best of luck people.

You got to bear in mind that in any given challenge there may be only 2 or 3 "voters without camera". I've had challenges where I saw none voting on my entry. So if there are two, say, and the average vote without camera is 2.5, that's a 4 and a 1... It's not statistically significant. IF all 8 of your 1's and 2's were to miraculously become 6's (and that of course can't be the case as your AVERAGE no-camera vote was 3.5) you'd have just cracked the top 10 with 6.018, true, but I strongly doubt you have 8 votes without camera...

A-HAAAA: 3.4 average, multiplied by number of votes, MUST be a whole number; thus, 5 or 10 votes without camera, 5 being the more likely. So IF those 5 had averaged 6 instead of 3.5, you'd have ended up with 5.932...

I have too much time on my hands, I do, and none of this means anything anyway LOL.

I hope you are right about that. Here is what just happened to me in the single light source challenge: someone help me out here.... I had an average of 6 after 10 votes. That is 60 votes total. Now I am at 5.5455 after 11 votes. that is a total of 61 votes.

So some nice person gave me a freakin 1????

Give me a break. That is insane.

Why do they not take off the top and bottom 10 votes you get and use the rest? That way if a few people vote in a mean way (like a 1!) it will get dropped, as will someone who votes high on an image just because they have the same kind of dog type thing.

Or perhaps they were trying to hit the "back" button?

How do I suggest they take the "back" and "forward" buttons away from the numbers for voting? So mistakes are not made?
11/16/2005 02:16:58 AM · #21
seeing that ur pic has great starting score, i guess it is perfectly possible that someone might have given you 1 just because of competition. Finding out that someone has unfairly voted is very difficult, becuase i can maintain, the gaussian distribustion of scores i give with giving 1s to very good pics those in reality i liked and thought might beat me.

I will try to be honest with my voting, becuase i am mainly a painter and i do not mind losing in photograph challenge.

if a person gives all ones or uses other unfair voting patterns their votes are disqualified during the calculation. Thats why it takes a minute or too to calculate finial scores - and why your vote might jump by a 0.1 or 0.2 from close of voting to announcement of results.

yaa but that could be easily avoided, if some one wish to.

So do you suppose this person's votes were disqualified? It appears that they gave all 10's in the Pumpkin challenge. Start at the bottom of page 3 of thier comments and you'll see that the comments and scores were basically cut and pasted for everyone.
