I live in a suburb of New Orleans so there isn't much "unusual" wildlife around.

Today when I got home from work..it was already dark...I was talking to a neighbor. I saw a "huge" bird gliding against the moonlit sky moving towards a tree in my neighbors yard. IT WAS A FREAKING OWL.

I ran and got my flashlight to verify. Yes, the owl was just staring down at me. I ran to my trunk to get my D70 with my 70-300mm. I popped open the trunk and guess what....NO CAMERA!

I left it at work in an unlocked desk with 3 lenses! To heck with the owl...I had to fly back to work to get my camera before it vanished...if you know what I mean.

Well I got it...but lost the shot of the owl....

....I may never get over it!

Thanks for listening,

KenSkid

that sucks, but atleast you still have your camera. if you lost your camera and the owl came back, that would be worse in my book

Well...that sucks AND that is good! Glad your camera was still there if that is that large of a concern but sorry you missed the owl. We have a lot of them around here and the only times I have ever seen one is when I did not have the camera with me.

Just ask yourself how the heck you were gonna get a shot of an owl in the dark with a 300mm telephoto and you won't feel half so bad :-) I'm glad the cam's safe.

Don't listen to any of them. Clearly it's time to toss a rope over a tree limb and hang yourself. Be a man and know when to duck out gracefully ;-)

I had a big giant sized flashlight left over from the hurricane and a neighbor willing to hold it! May or may have not worked out...but I'll never know!

Kenskid, where around New Orleans do you live? I'm in Slidell. Just far enough from the Lake that we didn't get any flooding. Just got our new roof today! :-) Drop me a note sometime.

Bummer about the owl too, but I'm glad your camera is OK!

There are plenty of owls in the world to photograph, but only so much money in your wallet for a new camera! Sorry you missed the shot!

Owls are thought to be a bringer of a bad omen.

You watch too much Harry Potter.

Owls are generally creatures of habbit. He has probably been flying in and out of that tree for years. You just have never noticed. You can't hear thier wings. If you don't see them or learn to listen for thier call you may never know they are around. Go out early in the morning before the sun rises and sit and observe. You will be very suprised at what lives in your backyard.
