I everybody. Not been there a lot in the last few weeks due to computer problem. The DSC-V3 as been sold on ebay sunday night and while the money won't be used to buy equipment, I'm already planning for a new round of acquisition in the next few months so I need advice on these pieces of hardware. They're all lenses. I learned the hard way since I have bought my 350D that glass is all. The only lense I will keep in the long term from those I have is the 50mm f/1.8 II wich will become the standard in term of optical performance and speed. I want that level of performance in all lens I'll get. I really need good advice and where else could I get it if not here? So here's the list:
Sigma
30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM for Canon
18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC for Canon
Canon
EF 35mm f/2.0
EF 85mm f/1.8 USM

I played with an 85 1.8 and I loved it. That being said, I'd consider the Tamron 28-75 2.8 which is fantastic (as others will attest to).

I love the Sigma 30mm - the only proper digital equivalent of the classic 50mm focal length at the time I bought it, really, and that 1.4 is useful sometimes (and someting of a trip-hazard at others). Not the sharpest thing I've ever looked through, however; but certainly useable.
I would strongly have to recommend the Tamron 17-35 though - not on your list, around the same price as the Sigma, way way way sharper, not as bright. Fabulous piece of stuff, and the best buy I have in my bag. |

The Canon 85mm f/1.8 is exceptionally nice & crisp. I had one on loan for a little while, and loved it. It's on my "to buy" list.
Be SURE to consider the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, an absolutely exceptional lens at an extremely desirable price point.

I agree with Bear Music here! I have both of these lenses and they are my main arsenal now! Both are fantastic and great value for money! |

I have the Sigma 18-50 2.8 EX DC. It was between this and the Canon 17-40 4L for $200 more. Depends...I like it, a lot. there are many pics in my profile/portfolio with that lens. Very sharp, fast nice. A tad quicker focusing might be nice is my only complaint, if even I'd go so far as to call it a complaint. For low light work, indoor use, it is fantastic. I spent a day at a museum and WOW, this is a great lens for that. I bought it mainly for weddings and indoors it is great.
Now then, as a walk around (for me) the 50mm is too short. I did a great deal of looking - options: canon 28-135 IS USM, canon 17-85 IS USM, the 18-200's made by everybody, and the one that i kept coming back to is the Tamron SP24-135 3.5-5.6. The SP is their pro line, and i have yet to find a negative word about this lens. I've had it for 3 weeks now, and I cannot find a bad thing to say. Solid, SHARP, fast focusing and a great range. Do consider this lens and check the reviews on it.
If FF vs APS matters, then the Tamron 24-135 works on FF, the Sigma 18-50 is an APS as is the canon 17-85. The Canon 17-40 is FF capable. I'd like to try the canon...i may move up to that one day. I want a 70-200 2.8 first!

I echo what Makka, Bear and Mavrik say about the Tamron SP 28-75mm f/2.8... |
