Sooooooo, the hubby convinced me that since all the kids will be with the ex's this Thanksgiving that driving through to Florida for a week would be fun. I agreed on the condition that there be MANY photo-opportunities on the way down and while there. We do this drive all the time - and are taking a slightly rounder and less ... well Rt95-ish type route on the way.
It will be DARK to Knoxville, TN (think night shots, midnight will be somewhere around Harrisburg VA) and then we will be going through Alabama to Destin, Florida. I have a week in the Panhandle and plan on going to the airforce base, the waterfront that was damaged from Katrina and the storm before that, and all over southern Alabama.
So.... Ideas? Where to go, what to look for - my husband and his family have spent a lot of time here - but not with a photography minded PITA dragging them all over the place.
Share share share and I promise a tour if your ever in Mass. :)
(Edit to make sense)

Well, if you want some aftermath shots. Bayou La BAtre, AL is a good start. I've been through, people sleeping in tents in thier yards, houses beyond repair.
I personally enjoy shooting the forts in the area. Fort Pickens in Pensacola, FL, Fort Morgan, outside of Gulf Shores, AL.
Might want to check out Oudoor Alabama for ideas on where to go while cruising through Alabama. Check out DeSoto Resort State Park on the site. The caverns there are wonderful.

Washington DC at night is great. All of the monuments should still be lit up when you pass through.
Sounds like you are driving pretty straight down there rathert han taking it slow. I won't suggest The Smokeys or any North Carolina stops...
Memphis and Nashville worth a stop...

sounds like great fun, can't wait to see images. I would think the small fishing villages along the coast would be a good place to start looking. explore where ever you are. the key to creativity is to learn to photograph everyday objects in new and exciting ways. |

LOL! I know, I could easily spend 4 hours on one street or one roadside attraction if the people coming to visit it are amusing and interesting. I know I'm not gping to be hurting for subjects, I'm just trying to make a plan so I don't get overwhelmed (or end up with my husband giving up and driving away without me! LOL!)
I leave on Tuesday night and its pretty felxible so long as I make it in time for Thanksgiving dinner - but I don't want to push my husband completley over the edge too. LOL after that I have till Tuesday morning as we are flying back from Pensacola.
I'm figuring that there will be less to shoot at night (and since I have to drive this partly myself I do need to sleep at some point). :)

Well, its tough because I don't want to exploit anyones misfortune, but I also feel like I SHOULD go and see while I am there. Being from the north has made a lot of the aftermath seem sensationalized and unreal. I feel like I need to try, especially in Louisianna and Alabama away from New Orleans - because up north we have heard very little about everywhere else, just the city and the flood. I know people are being forgotten, I feel like I shouldnt fall prey to that too.
I want to detour through the Smokeys - but I'm thinking I may get completely sidetracked for longer than a day if I do... :)
