| 2nd question for the night, in your opinion, will Canon replace the 20D within the next 5-6 months? I am itching in places that only costs money, but I do not want to buy and in a few months face a great/ upgraded camera. |

Based on Canon's upgrade pattern yes.

My guess is sometime in the late winter - early spring (Feb to April 2006).

I heard from this Japanese chap that the new one is just going to be a small upgrade. Still called 20d but with an N tagged on the end.
Who knows! Cant wait though!!! leaning towards this instead of the 5D.

The only constant in digital life is that there WILL be a new model tomorrow...
I'd concentrate on getting good lenses... :) |

| The 30d will be released in the end of Feb. I spoke with someone who has "held" it. :) |

I'll just be upgrading from the 300D to the 20D when the 20D's replacement comes out. A safe and cheaper way to upgrade.

The only reason I upgraded now instead of waiting is because of the current rebate program. I purchased 2 'L' lenses at the same time so I ended up only paying $949 or so for the 20D :)

Yes, about February seems to be the most popular guess based on when Tradeshows are and when Canon does things.

WOOHOO! Happy for you. Folks living in the USA seem to have access to lots of these Canon rebates, but they are practically non-existent here in Canada. I have more than enough saved to buy the 20D right now, hell I have almost enough for a 1DMkII, but I can't justify putting the money down for the limited amount of photography I do right now. It just doesn't make monetary sense.

Funny - it was just last night before I went to bed that I decided to look and see what rebates Canon had going right now. I saw the double and triple rebate deal, and calculated that I'd save $585 if I purchased the 20D, the 24-70mm L, and the 70-200mm IS L, just as you have done. VERRRRY Very tempting. But I really don't have the money for this right now, so I'm doomed to dream.
I'm back to hoping to by either the 20D or it's predecessor when it comes out, or buying one of those L lenses instead. (I have a Canon film camera - the EOS Elan II - so I'm happily committed to Canon glass.)
Decisions, decisions.... :)

| If you go to the Canon USA web and then under support you will see there are two 20D's listed, a standard 20D and then a 20Da. I suppose the difference is a software or firmware upgrade. |

The 20Da is a specialized version for "astrophotography".
It has a few specialized features:
1) allows for more capture in the infrared spectrum.
2) allows for using the LCD screen to give an enlarged viewscreen view (like many P&S do, and Olympus' E10/20's did)
3) output to TV while photographing
That's basically it. |

I do think we will see a new 20Dn next year. It will have minimal refinements. It will fix several bugs that many 20D users have experienced. And it will incorporate a "larger" viewscreen. (Perhaps at the expense of a smaller dial.)

from the dpReview site:
Canon Japan has this morning sprung a surprise on everyone with the announcement (in Japan only so far) of the EOS 20Da. This specialized version of the EOS 20D appears to be identical except for the removal of the 'hot mirror', the filter in most digital cameras which removes the InfraRed part of the spectrum. This camera would be especially suited to astrophotography as well as InfraRed photography, in use as a 'normal camera' it would probably require an external IR cut filter on the lens. In addition the camera has a partially transmissive mirror which enables live focusing on the LCD monitor (this can only be done for short times and requires the mirror to be locked up).

If the latest and greatest is indeed great, maybe I'll sell off my 300D and a couple of my non-L lenses. Then my 20D will be my back-up LOL For me, the latest would have to:
1) Have a bigger preview screen, which I bet it will
2) Have more AF points! The 9 on the 20d is an improvement over the 7 on the 300d, but I want more!
3) Have to be 10-12MP
4) Have 2 compact flash spots (ok, just throwing this one out there...it would be handy...LOL)
5) Be under $2500
I did save quite a bit of money on the rebate deal. By Feb, I will have had more time to play with my new toys and I will know if I want to sell my 28-135 IS and my 75-300mm IS. Judging by picture quality with the L lenses, I think I will be more than ready to sell them..LOL I'll also have to pick up a couple photo shoots to cover the extra ;)

[[[ Naw...if anything they would add an SD slot. I think they did that with the 1Ds MKII ]]] |

6) Have a 1Ds MII body, because we shouldnt have to buy a battery grip for every new camera that comes out,

| If there is something the 20D does not do that you need, then I'd wait. Otherwise you can get the 20D with confidence. It's a great camera body. |

Well, although he had to sign papers stating he wouldn't tell anyone anything, I did pry out that it is not 12mp, and it is not full frame (if so, it would be a 5d).
