I have long had an interest in graphics design, both for print and the web, and in my search some months ago to learn more, I came across a fantastic book for people like me: The Non-Designer's Design Book by Robin Williams.
This book takes 4 basic elements of good design (Proximity, Contrast, Alignment, and Repetition) and teaches you how to use them to make the most of the printed item you are designing, be it a business card, flyer, book cover, etc. It's written in an entertaining way, and many excellent examples are given.
I recommend it very, very highly:

*bump* for the other side of the world crowd who may find this of interest.
No, I don't know the author, nor am I getting paid in any way for this recommendation. It's just a really, really useful book!

I recommended this book to a non-profit social justice group I work with... they loved it. It is set up by showing pictures of typical ads/posters/pamphlets etc..., people make, and then showing how they can be improved. Simple, but easily overlooked, methods to improve designs.
Anyway, yeah... don't know the author either and so on, but it is a great book. |
