I was curious about Coolhar's contention in this thread that double open challenges means fewer votes so I took a look at some stats. They're certainly nothing complicated, I'm no numbers nerd like some of you, but I thought I'd share the results of my tedious little additions in case anyone was interested. :)

The votes results are based on the average number of votes given stat for each challenge.

Seven weeks of two open challenges (14 challenges)
283 votes per challenge
490 entries per week (3434 total)
245 entries per challenge

Last seven weeks of single open challenges
345 votes per challenge
345 entries per challenge (2420 total)

Seven weeks previous (7 challenges)
319 votes per challenge
441 entries per challenge (3089 total)

Seven weeks at this time last year
305 votes per challenge
246 entries per challenge (1726 total)

Or, if you're a chart person:

Interesting. This reflects my situation where I'm spending more time entering challenges and have less time to vote.

But I am enjoying the two open challenges more than the old, single one.

I find there are so many challenges to vote on I can't seem to decide which one(s) to concentrate on and end up voting piece-meal on several!
Certainly entering is taking up more time!

Is 490 the average number entered in both open challenges per week after the split or the average for individual open challenges? That seems high if it's per individual challenge...I thought most were in the 200s (even landscape is just under 400).

i was pondering the same thing as kearock - but didn't want to say anything because i didn't really want to do the math myself....

Eep, you're right. It should say "per week," not "per challenge."

ahhh that makes more sense, cheers MK!

So...there are actually MORE votes going into each individual open challenge than there are entries. Sweet.

Because I've found myself in a math mood, here are the average total number of votes given per week (MK's votes x MK's entries), which I think are important to consider.

A) 2 Open Challenges: 138,670
B) Last 7 weeks of 1: 119,025
C) Prior 7 weeks: 140,679
D) 7 weeks last year: 75,030

E) Average of B&C: 129,852

7 weeks may be a limited sampling, but I'd say on the whole the total number of votes given has remained fairly constant, if not risen a bit.

My apologies for being too lazy to make a chart.

Seeing these stats, even though there are fewer votes cast per challenge now, the number of votes is still statistically significant. I don't think having another 30-60 would make much of a difference in the scores.

I wonder how much the average number of comments has been affected by the split, however. I would think that would be the number people would care about most. But I really like the double open challenges. I hope they're here to stay.

Thanks mk for compiling those numbers.

Shouldn't take you any longer to enter as you are still only allowed to enter the same number per week. Perhaps you are benefitting from the second advantage I mentioned in that other thread.

I hope no one is trying to enter both of the exclusives by using a ghost account. I'm sure the admins are on the lookout for that.

That shouldn't be considered a negative unless you are not meeting the 20% threshold. Keep voting as you like. Lots of us do it piecemeal.

This is probably a result of some people still voting on all available challenges even though they can no longer enter all of them. Sweet indeed, hope that trend continues.

The results from your B to A are not consistent with C to B. Probably need more data. At least there's no big drop off.

True, and I hope we don't see the totals go down to where their statistical significance becomes marginal. Someone smarter than me will have to tell us when we would reach that point.

Overall I think the numbers are gratifying. The phenominon I feared (lower number of votes per challenge) is present but not to an alarming extent. At least not yet. A higher numbers of votes cast means more accurate results. Please keep on voting as you have been, and more if possible.

Thanks again to mk.
