This is the method I used for my Triptych entry-
Once you've selected the photo(s) to use you should think next of the layout you are planning to use - 3 verticle panels, or horizontals, etc.; then think in terms of what final output you are aiming at, in other words, if it's for dpc there is the 640 maximum dimension; if you are aiming at a print, decide what size it will need to be to look the way you want it to, and work backwards from there -- an 8x10 at 300 ppi means you need it to be 3000 pixels wide -- allow for borders and then divide by three for verticle panels to get the width of each of the 3 panels; repeat for the other dimension. You'll come up with the size of each panel. Crop each photo (or segment, if dividing up one image) to this aspect ratio, and resize. Add borders to each individual segment (not necessarily symetrical); then assemble into the whole by creating a new layer the size of your final image, and copy & pasteing each segment into the new layer as a new selection; then save the new layer image, or save to web if you have a maximum for file size as in the challenge.
I had to experiment with each of my Triptych challenge attempts to find the best proportion of border to image. Depends on the nature of the image(s) and the color of border I think.
This challenge was my first attempt at trips but I followed the advice given by bear_music and others in the forums. It was easier than I thought it was going to be. I'm sure there are other methods that will work too.
