So, I didn't have alot of time on my submission.

I hurried to get the submission ready, and when making a new BG for my three panels I made what I thought was a fairly big enough size. I cropped the three pix to fit withing my vision of what I was after.

However, this being my first attemp at this type of challenge brings me to a question.

For the three panels to be not so out of dimension, to look more like a good transformation to the BG, what would be a good size for the BG?

How would I in the future make the panels look less squeezed together?

Is there a formula?

A tutorial?

Thanks in advance.

I don't think there's a formula since the presentation will depend on the images you want to include. Hopefully someone can point you to some general guidelines.

when you gather together the pictures to go into your triptych, before downsizing them.. get them all the shape you wish to have in the triptych with the edge borders if you wish.. then check to see what they're size is, if you have three 5x7s then you know your background NEEDS to be over 15" by 7" I would then make a background 20 to 25 by 15to 20. then you can move around the three photos, making them what you want in the center of this background. Then crop the background to how you want it to look around the three photos after flattening it.

This is the method I used for my Triptych entry-

Once you've selected the photo(s) to use you should think next of the layout you are planning to use - 3 verticle panels, or horizontals, etc.; then think in terms of what final output you are aiming at, in other words, if it's for dpc there is the 640 maximum dimension; if you are aiming at a print, decide what size it will need to be to look the way you want it to, and work backwards from there -- an 8x10 at 300 ppi means you need it to be 3000 pixels wide -- allow for borders and then divide by three for verticle panels to get the width of each of the 3 panels; repeat for the other dimension. You'll come up with the size of each panel. Crop each photo (or segment, if dividing up one image) to this aspect ratio, and resize. Add borders to each individual segment (not necessarily symetrical); then assemble into the whole by creating a new layer the size of your final image, and copy & pasteing each segment into the new layer as a new selection; then save the new layer image, or save to web if you have a maximum for file size as in the challenge.

I had to experiment with each of my Triptych challenge attempts to find the best proportion of border to image. Depends on the nature of the image(s) and the color of border I think.

This challenge was my first attempt at trips but I followed the advice given by bear_music and others in the forums. It was easier than I thought it was going to be. I'm sure there are other methods that will work too.
