Don't let a layman to billboard printing tell you what 8.2mp can or canot do. Ask the person who would best answer this question: The printer.

And despite the good intentions, upsizing using Genuine Fractals or any upsizing app is probably not the best move.

True printers, especially ones who could even DO a billboard, would have a high end RIP (raster image processor), many of which cost tens of thousands of dollars, and their only goal is to properly deal with images. I would trust a high end RIP to process my photo over Genuine Fractals any day.

Your printer, if they're pro, knows better than anyone what is needed. Talk to them, see what they say. Ask about post processing. Some places ask that you not crop or sharpen, as they can do these for you to work best for the viewing size, and crops that are too tight can cut into workable area. Leaving some space is good because of bleeds (you have to print slightly larger than the size intended, then cut to size).

Just my thoughts.

So, what, nobody believes annasense...?

annasense is correct....you can pretty much put crap up on a billboard and from 500 feet it looks just as good as the internet.

The only reason we shoot so high a resolution (my D2x is the lowest rez we shoot) is we never know where our images will go.

We do not tell clients to pay us $150 an hour for studio time and shoot photos that will be limited where we can use them.

We charge $150 an hour whether we shoot D2x, medium format, betterlight or whatever. Now for $200, our Betterlight photo can go in a fashion catalogue, a center truck in Vogue, on a building in Times Square, on a billboard, in a newspaper, in a sell sheet..wherever.

Why shoot medium film and scan and then introduce steps in a process when digital blows all film away now? The only time we shoot film is for stadium panoramas at night, big architecture where we need our view camera or our aerials.

Anyhoo..annasense is right in this scenario, 8 megapixel will be fine.

I don't think these are opinions for laymen..... You HAVE it from a reliable source.

I'm doing billboards, and usually customers are bringing us 10x smaller size in 300 dpi resolution and after that during riping we are upsizeing it to real size. Dots are bigger but nobody looks billboard closer than few meters and in that case it looks cool.
Do not worry and get your photo from your camera.
