No. When you think... |
You are wrong, let it die.
When everybody thinks of great LANDSCAPE photographers, they don't think of the ones who shoot cityscapes.

Also, if we aren't going to reasonable and have common sense, then why shouldn't someone simply interpret Landscape as being the format/ratio of width x height and say, "My shot was in Landscape, they just don't have an open mind". Let's just see the top 10 and see what the majority of reasonable people think are landscapes. Hehemmm, LAND - scapes. At least 8 out of top 10 will be obviously landscapes, minimum.

Just my two cents, but what are cities built on? Land. The land may have been corrupted by urbanization, but it's still land, and thus photos of cities would be landscapes.

Yeah fotomann, but you are taking photos of skyscrapers, buildings, improvements. Not the land. It would fall under the specific category of cityscape, or urban landscape. But if landscapes and urban landscapes were the same thing, then there would be absolutely no need for the latter descriptive word. You see language and words are what thoughts and knowledge are built upon. Words are very important.

If there are 2 cityscapes in the top 10, that would be a coup for the cityscapes. They did not represent 20% of the entries...
I have 9 ten or nine scores. 3 are more urban than natural...

This is one of the reasons I don't bother with entering challenge much now. It's becoming a free study you can shoe horn into a challenge. Anyone want to buy my gear??

So if you're not entering challenges anymore you're going to sell your equipment?! Surely you enjoy photography for more than just the virtual ribbons up for grabs here every week? ;^)

Landscape photography |
Here's an excerpt from the article I mentioned earlier. Sounds about right to me.
"A landscape is a section or portion of scenery as seen from a single viewpoint. Scenery is the subject of a landscape image. Typically, people and animals are not shown in a landscape, unless they are relatively small in the image and have been included in the composition to show scale. Some photographers argue that the sea coast, the city and man-made structures in general should not be included in a landscape, and images that do contain them are more accurately called seascapes or cityscapes. From a purist perspective, they are probably correct, since a landscape is a picture of the land and its aggregate natural features. However, if natural scenery dominates an image, it can probably be accurately termed a landscape, even though there may be a farmhouse in the distance, a city skyline on the horizon or a road or path in the foreground."

Ribbons?? I've never been near a ribbon. I just get pissed off hearing all this whingeing about what fits where and if a word means this or that! So I have been considering selling off the Canon and going back to P&S for my own pleasure.
But then again, tomorrow I might change my mind.

If history repeats itself no cityscape made the top 50 in the first landscape challenge. |

Isn't landscape when the camera is horizontal instead of vertical???
