Damn, I can't believe how long it has taken me to get to this point! Oh well, nobody ever said it was going to be easy. And, I've got a LONG ways to go. But, I can't complain. I'm getting where I want to be, and it has been a great trip so far. I've really enjoyed all ya'll's company, and hope you'll stick around for my further adventures!

In case you didn't know, photography is a full-time pursuit for me. This is it, 24/7. I'm not making a living at it, yet, but I will be. It takes time and effort. I can't imagine, though, how hard it must be to try to get something like this going working at it part-time. My hat is off to you who have the wear-with-all and patience to go about it that way. For me, it was a matter of making a commitment and going for it. I started this effort in earnest back in March, and it's finally starting to take traction. The key now is to take advantage of the momentum.

Every now and then, I might hazard a guess or offer an opinion about something I don't know anything about. However, I'd rather stick to reporting what I've done, what works, and what didn't work. Sure there are a lot of ways to get to the same point, and I damn sure will make mistakes. All the same, I am making it work in the real world; I am more given to proving something than to debating theory.

---------------------------------------------

A couple other notes:

I'm going to use this thread as an on-going 'index' of articles and such. That will make it easier for me to keep things organized. And, if you're interested, this would be the thread to 'watch'.

I do hope to participate in challenges, but I think that will be more of happy coincidence than something planned. It's also pretty hard to be able to share on-going work and maintain a modicum of 'anonymity'.

I'll also participate as much as possible in the other parts of the site, voting, commenting, and forums, but I imagine that I'm not going to be able to keep up as much as I have in the past. I definitely will be steering clear of any of the negative crap that comes up; life's just too damn short to get sucked into some of the things that come up here.

I truly appreciate all the support I've gotten from this community, and that's the main reason I want to give back. If you are trying to do this, feel free to PM me anytime.

If you need an image or a freelancer, I'm available ;-) (see below...)

---------------------------------------------

Anyways, I am finally satisfied with my 'starting point' for a website: my site

It will go under many more revisions/updates, but this will do for the moment.

I've also finally settled on my freelancing message: freelancing

As always, comments & suggestions are welcome!

---------------------------------------------

At the risk of leaving some out, I do want to publicly thank a number of people who have really helped me out so far. Thanks for all the guidance, tips, suggestions, feedback, encouragement! Ya'll mean the world to me, and I can only imagine how much harder this road would have been had ya'll not been on it. Thanks!

Also, even though I'll never understand John Setzler, what he thinks, what he wants to do, what he really thinks about DPC, I do have to thank him again for initiating the human scavenger hunt. That one event was probably the turning point for me. It helped me find my path. I just hope he's finding his...

---------------------------------------------

Thanks again for everything!

Cheers,
Skip

Glad to hear your dream chasing is working out. I too am chasing the dream of self employement, and also started in March and am now finally gaining traction. Once the ball gets rolling it can go downhill, i mean, gather moemntum rather quickly.

Your photos and website look good. It seems weddings are popular for freelances so it might be an idea to shoot a wedding just for your menu, it might attract a larger audience.

Looks like you have some talent, best of luck to you!

Skip, I am so happy for you. I wish I could get the b@lls to do what you're doing and pursue this full-time... someday hopefully. Of course, I would need your talent to go along with that. I remember when you got Kodak photo of the day in NY, and I've been a fan of your adventures ever since. Thanks for all the truly inspiring stories and how-to's you've provided for us here. I put this thread on watch, and hope to see more of your adventures soon. Best of luck to you.

Congratulations, Skip! It's so nice to hear of someone making their dreams come true. You're definitely an inspiration! Best of luck to you. I'm also "Watching"

Oh, and if you ever make it to Watkins Glen (NASCAR) let me and the other Finger Lake'ers know!

You Duh Man, Skip. :)

Website works well - only suggestion I would make is to take out this line in your services page: "Although I have been working as a freelance photojournalist for less than a year..."

No need to volunteer any perceived deficiencies. I think people can look at your work and an undated list of your professional experiences and most would assume you have way more experience than you do.

My two cents. :)

I wish you great success!

update...
well, i guess i've been busy, maybe too busy, but then again, that beats the alternative ;-)

anyways, i've finally made time to work on my website. i think my content is probably about 80% done. at least it's almost to the point that i can start focusing on the critical parts: a dynamic gallery and an integrated shopping cart. i haven't tested it under anything but IE, but will appreciate any feedback that anyone has from any other platforms (as well as any other feedback, as well!)!

feel free to check it out www.skippix.biz

first, THANKS for all the continued support, comments, faves, PMs, etc--i really and truly appreciate it! secondly, i am really sorry if i've been slow getting back to some of you who've pm'ed me or emailed me. believe me, i'm not blowing you off--it's just been very time-consuming, trying to take this business to the next level.

lastly, i'd like to share some pretty cool things that have happened, lately:

the new lt-governor of virginia emailed me to say that he thought my shots of him at the inauguration were the best he saw, and he wants to buy some for his office, and maybe license them for his website.

there's a new local weekly that has just started up on the southside of richmond, and i will be one of its primary shooters.

i qualified for the virginia press association's annual competition. they allow freelancers's works to be submitted, as long as they meet the following criteria:

1) you have to have submitted work to at least half the issues published in the past year. i submitted 5-20 images to all but 4 issues between april and dec of last year.

2) you have to be recognized in the community as being associated with the paper. at this point, that's a given.

3) your credit line in the paper needs to indicate a relationship with the publication. well, even though it doesn't mean any more money (yet), they have started running my credit line as Skip Rowland, Staff Photographer.

i submitted 7 individual photos and 2 photo essays. they'll be judged in february, and the awards will be announced in march. on one hand, i'm lucky to only be competing against 26 other papers in our circulation category, but, on the other, some of these are really good papers, so nothing is a given. the best part is, i got to submit this image:

well, i'm fried for now...it's been a long year. i wish i had something to enter in the off-centered challenge, but i didn't really run across anything that struck me this week. on the other hand, things are looking pretty good for the free-study ;-)

until later, thanks again, and cheers to all!
