I often download actions into PS 7 to achieve certain effects and every now and then, I will run across one that acts like it's going to play normally, and then it will get to a certain step and say for example:
"merge layer command unavailable."
It is specified that this is for PS6 or higher. Anybody know why it doesn't work? I've had this happen on a couple of them. Is it just a download issue? Thanks.

I have no idea either....... but it occurs in several situations. I have seen error msgs like this come up if you engage a action in 16 bit rather than 8 bit & vice versa; when in the base layer with other layers above it unmerged or flat; while in an unmerged layer; when in a duplicate layer with and without merged layers present - lots of other variations too. Actions are sometimes finicky. They often want a perfect work environment in the software, depending on how they are written to be employed. Also your settings in the action might have been adjusted incorrectly. |

I'm just taking a stab in the dark here but I would guess that the
actions were created in a different version of photosthop. They should work but not everything always does. |

Particularly in PS7, the 16-bit thang can be a pain... some functions work on 16-bit, some do not. That's even true in CS to a minor extent. When you get an error like that, dig in and see exactly what the action was trying to do, and on what layer. Try it manually, and see if the menu choice is "grayed out", then research why. It might have to do with bit depth, or a setting on the layer, or...
