Why do manufacturers not have an active firmware development kit (SDK style) - or actively put features in the firmware themselves? I am not really talking about patches here but extensions to option values e.t.c.

It just seems like a huge untapped area (apart from some hacks for the rebel that I know exist). It also annoys me to see functions with 1 or 2 values that could easily have more and expand the functionality [e.g. Why a 10 second delay on the 20D, how about 3, 5, 15 second options ΓΆ€“ How about I have the software set 3 intervals that I like instead (defaulted to something on shipping) ΓΆ€“ Cheap P&S cameras have more choices here].

I understand that there are limits on the hardware and there needs to be some control for the manufacturers since the hardware can no doubt support more than the software due to shared components across model lines e.t.c. but there is a thriving market in expanded/replacement firmware for MP3 players e.t.c. and giving some entension capacity would help them IMO.
