I ususally shoot JPG, but when it really matters i shoot RAW and use Canon's DPP to convert to JPG and then PS 7 for finish work.

When i make prints i use Walmart or Winkflash.com - both use Fuji machines. I do not sharpen at all for prints, i do for on-screen display.

I noticed wedding shots i had done a while back were not as sharp as i thought they should be, and i blamed camera shake or just iffy (low light) focus. I may have been wrong.

I think I found the problem - I did some pet portraits and some i shot in JPG, and some in RAW. Today I got the 8x10 prints and the JPG ones are tack sharp. the RAW conversions are a tad soft!

In DPP i have the sharpening set to 2 (default maybe?). I guess I need to crank this up a bit, or else sharpen in PS for printing?

So my question is - Am i seeing things, or are RAW images less sharp? If they are less sharp, what adjustments do i need to make in my workflow to get the same sharpness as i get with a JPG capture?

What are your jpeg settings in the camera? My guess is that you have the sharpening turned up.

RAW is straight from the sensor so no sharpening is applied. Also, converting to TIFF rather than JPG will eliminate any compression issues. Only save as JPG once editing is complete in PS.

DPP may not be the best conversion tool to use either. RawShooter Essentials will give you a lot more control and it's free. Unless of course your on a mac, then your out of luck.

Yeah, RAW is less sharp only because it is not applying in-camera sharpening to the image file. I personally use fred-miranda's D70 pro (designed for the d70) plug-in for all prints. It has anti-halo and all kinds of sweet stuff.

RAW Images are just that...Raw data with no sharpening applied to them. JPG's out of camera are sharpened in camera. You NEED to sharpen your RAW files in post processing.

OK, how much sharpening, and when - using DPP it will be done as with the in-camera JPG - before i get to PS. Or should it be a final step like USM just before printing, aka, last thing done in PP?

Anyone use DPP? what settings do you use?
