It flipped at midnight EST. Country life must already be submitted. We are voting on it now.
The two to shoot for are speed and letter b.
Sorry!

Yep, you're in New Zealand, that's the problem. I can sympathize a little, I live on the West Coast of the U.S. and we have a 3 hour gap. So, the people on the East Coast seem to have an advantage. You are probably 9 hours or so difference? You just have to adjust.
I once considered suggesting some kind of adjustment allowance for different time zones, but I don't know how well that would go over. Probably a lot of work for the administrators.?

There's really not an advantage for the east coaster, because you get to start at 9PM your time Sunday or Tuesday night. We start at midnight.
For reference, the challenge starts (usually) and ends (always) at midnight DPC time. DPC time is visible at the bottom of this and every page on the site.

So, how is it to our advantage to get to start shooting at 9 P.M.? It's not. If the shoot requires daylight, we have no time left, just like you. Then we have to upload by 9 P.M., not midnight. That takes away time we could use for post-processing. It is different, and if you lived here a while you would notice. It might all seem relevant to you, but it's not really, it does make a difference.
And, if you live in New Zealand, like this gentleman, it's probably hard to keep time zones all straightened out. If not, then why the problem?

I see your point.... with 7 fulls days in the challenge I can't frankly see that making much of a difference. And, for the time zone issue... again, the simplest solution to that is to look at the "Current server time" at the bottom of the page. Any cases I've seen of a missed deadline due to time zones have been because of a user not being aware of the deadline being in EST/EDT, not because of a miscalculation.

You have 168 hours to shoot and upload. If you wait til the last 3 hours, that's not the EST people's fault! lol

Well heres the problem i made an error and its esay to do ok!
remember in New Zealand we are a day ahead so if a challenge finishes on sunday thats a monday for me.
I havnt entered a challenge for a while and all the other challenges i did enter the deadline was always 5pm monday NZ time....things have changed and deadlines differ now, so i should of checked.
Oh and not all have us have 168 hours to shoot as some of us dont have time.

I think it would be helpful to have the "system time" shown on the home page (sort of like eBay does, so it is clear what time the server thinks it is, since it is the only time that matters.) Additionally, I'd like to see a "time remaining" line under each challenge.
Time remaining to submit: 6 days, 5 hours
Then, when it gets down to the last day, it could highlight the time remaining in red and show:
Time remaining to submit: 5 hours, 43 minutes!
Shouldn't be too hard since the site content is already dynamic (i.e., the recently posted forum topics at the bottom of page) and generated by PHP...
P.S. Is the midnight Eastern Time deadline mentioned anywhere? I didn't see it on the rules page (didn't look that closely). |

I actually DID take my Country Life shot last weekend ... and then forgot to download it off my camera and edit it. I remembered on my way to an evening activity last night, and then didn't get home in time to rush-job it up. Oh well. For those of you not against 'outtakes', it's in my UnChallenged gallery.

That information is available at the bottom of every page on the site.

I like that idea a lot. I'll run it by Drew and Langdon and see if it's easily implementable. I'm not sure if the page is generated on demand or only on post updates though... so I dont know if it's 100% dynamic. I'll ask.

I'm sure it is mentioned somewhere, but it doesn't seem to be as evidint as it should be, or as it used to be. I'll see about getting this resolved.

Well I'll be! Never noticed that before. It is definitely more obvious here in the forums (in black, bottom right) than "hidden" in with the gray "fine print" at the bottom of each page. :-)

Even if the page is only generated once an hour (like submission stats are), it could still say something like:
Less then 4 days, 4 hours remaining in this challenge.
then, in the last 24 hours, in red:
Less than 21 hours remaining in this challenge!
Thanks for checking into it. (And for making the midnight ET deadline more obvious!)
