Back story: Have done some amateur sports photography and have recently become annoyed with the repetitiveness of the pictures, so decided to look through topics on the subject here, didn̢۪t realize how many there were I don̢۪t have time to look before work, so I shall simply leave a link up and any critique̢۪s would be appreciated.

More Back story (bout the pic) : Played soccer for 8 years, refereed for 4, photo was taken this last Saturday (the 5th), it is completely stock.

Hi :) I am a big soccer player myself...have played for over 20yrs now! About the photo....the two things that bother me the most are:
1) The defender's head is cut off
2) There are a ton of distractions in the background. Maybe they could have been minimized by using a wider aperture.

Great action :)

You realize for stock use, you'd need a model release from every person in the image.

I like the action and great colors.

Hmm, that players head being cut off bothered me tooâ€Â¦ sadly those two were far to close to me to do anything about itâ€Â¦ I shall hunt through my collection when I get home and find some nicer ones.

About model releases, I should actually have themâ€Â¦ ill have to check. As part of the soccer league they have to sign that for non profit use photos of them are allowed to be used. Ill check on that one.

The most annoying thing I believe is trying to actually get a photo with none of that distraction in the backgroundâ€Â¦ quite annoying I think. I also suppose that it is the curse, for me at least of always cutting of part of my subjectsâ€Â¦ quite sad I believe.
Here some more cut off ones. Same team, same day.
Cutoff 1
Cutoff 2
Just Weird

EDIT: About the wider aperture, I shall have to try that, either this week or next when I get a chanceâ€Â¦ thanks for the tip.

I tend to have many like Cuttoff #1. Soccer is a difficult game to shoot due to the size of the field. Now that I will have 2 camera bodies, it should be easier! I can have 2 different lenses handy at one time...LOL

They keys to a great sports shot, IMO, is:
1) Great action
2) No distractions in the background
3) The entire player in the frame

Not sure I have any that meet all 3 of my requirements..LOL I really have not shot much soccer, at least not seriously.

Good luck!

yeah, check the model releases. There is a difference from using images as flyers for the athletic league and using the images for your own profit.

To minimise backround try shooting down the feild, from behind and to the side od the goal, using a fairly narrow DOF. this can blur out the stuff you don't need and heighten the "contest of wills" feeling isolating a few players near the ball.

not true. editorial use does not require model releases. only when an image is used commercially does the model release come into play. also, along those lines, is the faces in the crowd exemption, that if it is a group shot that does not single out any specific individual, then it may be used commercially (although it is very rare that that happens).

It is a nice clear photo overall but i agree that the head cut off is a distraction.. I understand how hard it is to capture.. i have been trying it lately myself.. The later ones of mine arent any good at all (i was using my 75-300..waaayyyy too slow) the first lot i borrowed the canon 70-200L lens.. That is a great lens. (drool)
Anyway.. here are mine

Oh shoot. I realize that I have or rather had the complete wrong definition of stock in this context. Which just shows my ignoranceâ€Â¦ when I said stock photos I meant stock as in uneditedâ€Â¦ gah. Silly me, don’t get sick and post I should tell myself that.

As promised however I am looking though pics for a few of my favorites.

PS. I really do feel foolish... I'm to used to all other things which are "stock"

EDIT:
Hmm, I was unable to find the pictures I was looking for, somehow it looks like they have disappeared of the face of my hard drives and backups, no idea where they are so instead I present to you a bunch of photos of little kids playing soccer, 2 of a duck that was at the zoo and was investigating who this person was trying to take a photo with a huge zoom lens for a close up didn̢۪t want to change in case it swam away) and one other. tis of a pelican.

A small gallery of pics can be found here

EDIT2:
Brennan : yes that does usually help but as I mentioned I used to reff, and having done that I know how infuriating it is when people do exactly that. To be exact it is against the rules for people to linger behind on either of the goal lines, you risk loosing your license, the rules are usually bent for tournaments and professional play, but it is still against the rules. Hence I usually ask the reff if they mind before hand, explaining that I am not from either team and am simply taking photos for practice, usually they will allow it.
