PhotoImpact released version 11 - in this version they have a few new features that brings it up the scale in my opinion.
Curves and Smart Curves - just like PS curves
and the best - RAW processing ability. I have not tried this yet since it runs only on XP or 2000 and I don't have that at home, but my laptop has XP so I installed it there this morning to see what it was like - I like it. This afternoon I will bring in a RAW file and see how that works.
So now I have to decide - bring my laptop home everyday OR buy a new computer since my desktop at home has been so heavily modified that XP will not run on it.
Anyone else use this version that can comment on the RAW processing? |

Ok...I will take a stab at it:
I brought in some RAW images to test this feature out as well as some of the other new features...
RAW - no problem opening the .CR2 raw file (Canon's format obviously). Editing capability is much more complete and flexible than the software that comes with Canon Cameras - Photo Professional or the other utility. Both of those seem to have limited ability to actually do worthwhile edits. The results when saved as a .jpg were not diminished as long as 100% (no compression) was used.
Smart curves function - excellent results for an automatic process. Didn't handle bright light as well as I would have liked, but other than that was quite effective.
Regular curves command - EXCELLENT! A lot more capability than the previous functions you had to use to achieve the same results.
Smart extract/regular extract (new) - these work surpisingly well. Especially if you want to do a selective desat. These tools make it a snap. Literally in under two minutes I had a whole building selected, on its own layer, the photo desat and the building back in. The lasso and other tools are still there, but this extract funciton is a great addition.
In general - doing edits side by side between version 10 and 11 - it is longer to load, but it functions much better overall/in general; results are cleaner and the tools seemed to all have been refined. Much better color control and ability to work with 48 bit images (very nice since you get Trillions of color possibilities rather than just 16 million you get with 24 or what ever it is - gradients are a lot smoother) Layers were easy before but even easier now.
Overall it has been greatly improved. So far all my plug-ins and filters work and a lot of the PS6 (only version I have) filters and effects work that would not work in PI 10. If anyone is looking for a good editor and does not have the bucks for PhotoShop, for 89.00 new (49.99 upgrade) as long as you have XP or 2000 this is a great program and a lot closer to PS than anything else I have used.
I have only had it installed for a few hours, but if I find anything worth reporting on I will. I know not a lot of people here use it, but for those that want to step up from something less capable, this is an excellent choice...just my opinion of course.
Just my 49.99 worth...
