Just putting something up for general discussion. I get real annoyed at the people who freeload on the site by entering the challenges but hardly ever do any voting. I don’t really care about the “comments made” argument that’s to big at this stage to get involved in but surely their must be some requirements to vote.

I don’t know if something like this has been mentioned before but I think it would be good if the site had someway of enforcing members to vote more. I understand that this may have some adverse side effects, the real motivation behind this idea is to weed out the odd freeloader who won’t contribute to the site.

My idea would be to set a minimum number of votes cast but it would only take effect after you have entered 10 challenges. So if you got to 10 challenges you would need at least 100 votes cast before you could enter another one and you would then be required to have at least 100 votes cast for every future challenge you entered. This would be a softly softly approach so not to turn away new members and really a 100 votes per challenge would be easy to achieve.

I don’t think this would effect too many people just the one’s who were not contributing to the site and would perhaps keep us all a little more vigilant in our voting to challenge ratio.

I tend to fall on the other side of your argument. I'd prefer to let people contribute as and when they wish. I don't get too worried if someone votes or not as there will be various levels of engagement.

If people really get into the site then the votes will come, but I don't like heavy handed 'rules', which might cause friction and turn people away.

I fall on the side of being against this as well -- but for a different reason. When numbers are entered into the equation, as in your example of 100 votes per challenge entered (after the first 10); It puts a bit of pressure on the participants to place 100 votes. Yes I realize this is exactly what you are after -- but it does not put any pressure on the participants to vote well. That is, the emphasis is moved (to a greater or lesser degree) away from deciding on a vote for this entry and more toward 'must get my 100 votes in'.

I prefer the voters to see the trees, no the forest -- and, IMO, with the prevalent thinking that all entries must be voted on; there is far too much emphasis on the forest as it is.
