Hey there, I'm planning a new short movie that is a serious one about loneliness. It's about an old man who's wife has died and he has nothing to do all day except chores that were originally meant to please her. My super cool grampa has agreed to help out and the movie is pretty much based on him.

I'm looking for inspiration in photographs to trigger some thoughts for visuals and what better place to start than DPC? :-D I have many ideas in mind, some based on things I've already taken pictures of.

So do any photos here come to your mind? I'm looking for things like old-people faces, farms, weathered hands, old tools and other lonely themes.

Some I've found were:

I'm not planning on copying anyone, just looking for some sparks to a fire. :-)

Thanks!

A voyeristic approach might be an interesting way to introduce sympathy/pity - watching the man do what he does with him unaware of the camera

Shoot this as a documentary - just get him talking about what he does, why he does it, favorite memories of his wife and what they did together - then shoot b-roll of him doing what he does and put together the story that unfolds.

Ah, to have more time in my life for these things...

Focusing on the old weathered hands as he strokes a pet. Contrast of the hands against the furry softness of the animal. Got some examples if you want to see the effectiveness

edited to add image

I've already got my plan on how it unfolds, just looking for visuals. Thanks though, I like the idea of talking in it.

Now isn't this a coincidence. I just spent the last week been flown around Queensland photographing people in the outback for a large company. Over 1300 images and I will be flying out again in a few hours for another week of the same but including firefighters, police and schools in the outback.

When I get back if you are still after some images to view let me know and I will get some to you.

Good luck in your endeavour.

Sorry - I just realized this isn't at all what you were looking for.

Forget this post.

Dont' know if this will work for you. It's not up to your usual standard but it is kinda rural. Your welcome to use this one if you want and do whatever to it! :)

Good luck getting more pics!

I know a song (written by a friend of mine) which sounds a lot like theme ... sounds like a fun project.

This is the nearest I get. Could be a rural vibe?
No chores going on but the guy does have that lonely, don't know what to do, look.

I have some old prints from photos taken on my grandfathers farm, but I need to dig them out of storate to scan. But, just thinking of those images gives me a couple of ideas that help to set a mood that you have described. Hand tools that are worn from years of use can build a strong connection between person and what they have done for years. Showing these tools as now unused or without purpose can add to the mood of a photo. Farm buildings that have obviously been cared for but are still in disrepair from age can also set a mood. Clean glass in a worn wood frame and a cleanly swept walk to a building that has collapsed are examples. The traditional application of seasonal elements to seasons of life can also be powerful. Anything suggesting the fall season can help set a mood for late in life... coats pulled close to shelter from the wind, long shadows, and trees with only a few leaves left are thoughts that come to mind.

Hi Joey,

I've uploaded some that MIGHT be useful? Not sure... but they will prolly be most useful if you play around with them in black and white or sepia... I just did a quick find on my computer... so hope these help.

Men sitting in rockers, chairs or benches.

That one has a lonely feel to it to me.
