I noticed while reading the comments on our first and second placed winners in the Off Center challenge that a lot of people seemed to like insect macros. That being the case, I thought it was worth posting this, which was posted today on PhotoBlink. I think this is the finest insect macro I have ever seen.

PS: I tried to get the pic to show but keep getting my url/img tags wrong, I guess.

Ahh, Mr. Plonsky. He has an execellent article that covers some of his techniques...

That Dr. Plonsky does GREAT work! I know I shouldn't do this (I'm not in the same league), but here goes...my best insect macro.

What do you think?

Kirbic - Thanks for that link! That was a great article. I think I may be investing in some macro filters soon.....

Love those bug macros, thanks for sharing. I'm on my way to read the article, but wanted to include my best bug effort.

Here's mine... (not resized yet...just as it left the camera)

I was taking a photo of a wildflower on a hike last Saturday and at first thought that there was just some dirt on a petal but then I got closer...

This is a Crab Spider and they change colour depending on what they are on and the colour of the background. I call this, "Saturday's Execution". LOL

Apparently Crab Spiders are about 1 cm across so that helps to know the size so the insect it's killing must be a very tiny insect as well.

Jacko, those are amazing. That last one looks like he could do some damage with those pinchers!

Jacko - I loved the bee shot! That's working hard for your honey! The beetle shot was wonderful too! The spider looks good, but there's that small DOF with a wide subject bugger. Funny how small the spider's rear portion was. The lady bug looks familiar...have I seen that in a challenge? IMHO the red's a little overdone, but the rest - ooo la la!

Patzt - Yup, crab spiders have that cool cameleon effect. Do you know if it's a one time choice or can they change at will? I've got a nifty shot of a yellow version on a black eyed susan, very cool spider! You've got a neat name for it...I'd call it Lunch! Ha!

Thanks for sharing!

OMG, that's ugly. NOT THE PHOTO. The photo is great, I just never realized how scarey moths looked. Eeek!

Great. Now my skin is crawling. jk ;-)

I love that moth! It's not ugly!

Thanks for the comments on my spider. I don't know if they can turn back to their original colour but I was told that they can.

Not really a insect...but here's one I thought came out pretty well. I just wished this camera had a better macro function.

Should be titled "Polyphemus on rebar"... beautiful photo. Nice example of Polyphemus moth, a female, I think. Lots of great insect shots here. I think we need an "insect macro" challenge... or would that be a bit TOO much?
I was going to post one of mine, realized it's not on my HDD here on the road. Blast.

achiral, I really appreciated your bee photos. I grew up in a beekeepers family--my father did as well--and then my husband and I took over my father's apiary but after a few years, he became allergic to their stings so we had to give it up.

What lovely shots of the bee flying! Oh, how I wish I could catch one like that!

I love this thread! I'm so happy it was started!

that's an anole... chameleons are the lizards with the huge tongues, and the long (usualy curled-up) tails.
