I will be upgrading to a DSLR camera in December
after getting my head around the canon lens system
I had my sights set on a
Canon 20D
canon EF 50mm 1.8 II
canon EF-s 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM
canon EF 70-200mm f2.8L USM
canon 1.4 TC

now since Nikon have introduced the new D200 I need to compare camera / systems
I need to work out what Nikon lenses I need to look at to cover these lenses both in quality, speed and focal length

also info on 3rd party lenses that meet the "quality" etc. of the above

ps do Nikon have a designated L type range

thanks

I can't speak for everybody but get the best glass you can.

Fast, responsive, sharp lenses will outlast all the techno stuff.

Granted..if you shoot for a hobby..it's hard to justify over a thousand dollars for a lens... Fred Miranda's site has some great reviews on most of the glass worth buying out there and there is some great stuff from Sigma, Tokina and Tamron that is more sane.

As already mentioned check Fred Miranda. You can also look here for Nikon lens reviews:

Nikon Lens Reviews

In general the Nikon 70-200 VR 2.8 is equiv to the canon as is the 50mm 1.8. They do not make a 17-85 VR to match the canon as far as I know but they do make a non IS version or that focal length. They do have a 24-120 VR that is of the same quality with longer reach.

BTW - VR is Nikon's version of Canon's IS.

Hope that helps.

Tamron 28-75 is a remarkably good lens with near-macro capability and f/2.8 throughout range. It's a little less wide than the ones you're looking at though. But to get really good performance at the wide end you'd do better with a lens that didn't go so tele as 85mm; for example, the Tokina 12-24 gets good reviews.

My Canon 10-22 is about as flawless a lens as I could expect for a wide zoom, optically.

It's hard to beat canon L glass in performance, easy to beat in price.
Can you tell the difference, in actual use? Depends on how you use it. If you are always making 16x20 prints, then you better get L glass. If you need the weather sealing, the extra robust build or USM cabability, then get L glass. Other than that, you are tying up funds that might be better used on a better camera, more lenses for other used, strobes, etc.

I am 'collecting' Sigma and Tamron 'pro'lenses (EX and SP respectively) and I am very satisfied. One must pick and choose carefully, and you will make compromises. Third party lenses such as these will work the same optically on any camera brand.

Pretty much any 2.8 constant aperture zoom lens is gonna be the best in that brand.

Don't overlook the Olympus E-500 and the new 4/3 system. Not as many lenses to choose from yet but those available are all high quality, and some interesting ones that aren't seen in the offerings of the big two, like the new 35-100mm f 2.0 for example.
