Hi all... I just felt like posting something on the subject of rating... yes, I know this is an overdone subject... but I really feel like it's important to let you know how I feel. The photojournalism challenge was my first challenge, I was astounded to see that I had gotten 2 1's. Now I know this is not a high number, but I'm not sure why someone would give a one. I'm not complaing about the 1's as much as I am complaining about the fact that I have no clue why anyone would give me a one. I'm not saying that people don't have rights to give one's go ahead, but I think, that if you are going to give a picture, which isn't for obvious reasons a 1 EXPLAIN YOURSELF. Hey, if you are just giving someone a 1 because it is anonymous... and no one will know... thats not fair, and it doesn't make the photographer feel good! If you can give a 1 to someone then you can step up, and say who you are, and let the photographer know why you gave them a 1 or even a 2 and what they can do to improve the photo, or improve their photography. This site isn't just about competing for who gets the highest score! IT'S ABOUT LEARNING TO IMPROVE. When you give a one it's like you've just kicked someone who is obviously trying. I DARE the two people who gave me ones, to let me know why. You can do it privately if you like Photography_by_talya@yahoo.com I will not ridicule you publicly on this site, and I won't tell people who you are. But if you are going to give me a one or a two, I WANT TO KNOW WHY! So stand up and explain yourself, be a big person, or just a good teacher, and help me learn! People get consistently low scores on this site,... at least let us know how to improve!
I wanted to thank everyone who left comments for me. Although I only got 26 comments last time, I tried to reciprocate *5 I gave out 112 comments this time and it wasn't easy. None of them were less then a sentence, and I hope they help those who received them. For those I didn't get to comment on, I'm very sorry I missed yours. Good luck to everyone on this challenge, as I said before there are some great photos!

I gave you a 10. Thought it was an excellent shot and certainly met the challenge. Seems there are always a couple of ones for almost all photos, even the winners. I don't think you need to worry about them. |

I prefer to look at the distribution and the median score. Some casual members can vote with little thought or effort, and there are doubtlessly a few gremlins out there who simply like to up their odds a bit. Getting upset about 4 people who miss the point isn't worth your time. Your bell curve was noticeably positively shifted, and your median score was good, so that's all that matters. The winners almost always get about the same number of ones that everyone else gets. |

Talya, I think the people who give ones just wanna see people get all riled up. Don't give them the satisfaction of falling into their little game. Just forget those few low scores. Now if there were lots of 'em then you'd have to take a long, hard look at your submission. If there are no explanations, then maybe you could ask a few people for an honest critique. But if it's only a couple of very low marks, just forget it and move on. We've all gotten them. :-)

I have been pondering the 1 factor as well.. each week top photos always get a few ones... and it's truely puzzling, inconceivable even... I have wondered whether or not there are some poor sports who, when they see they have a great score and a shot at placing, go around giving all the other photos a 1 to lower others scores and better their chances at placing... yes it sounds crazy.... but, it would not be the first time in history something like that happened... I hope no one is doing it... but how else in the world can you explain the sites most popular photo getting rated with 7 (1)'s! either way, the best thing to do is not worry about it. Just let the chips fall where they may, and remember, we reap what we sow....

Ok, Ok... it came off as though I was complaining about my score. I want to say, I was very happy... it was my first time! The thing I was trying to say was (in too many words obviously) I think that those who gave the ones should stand up and explain themselves. I guess it's just wishful thinking. Hehehe... anyway... I really am happy with my score... Take care all!

I have three theories why 1s get inappropiatly posted.
1. Some poeple are so used to being at the low end of the bell curve, they just cant eem to see beyond it. This becomes evident in thisthis thead.
2. Finger trouble. I dounbt this si veyr connom.
3. A genuine dislike of the picture. I cant see much reason to object to yours, maybe they support another team. Nudity often gets a load of ones, and Ive personally hated one or two winners as far down as a 3.
Another reason may be that their camera is in the repair shop and you are starting to think folks are submitting good pics just to mock.
Here are some particularly mocking pictures from last week that would all have gotten 1s. So you can see why I didnt vote due to my particularly fragile emotional state. |

Even if you don't like the topic, I can't see why a competently taken photograph should get marked with a 1. However, the results we see every week shows that not everyone votes the same way, I guess!
For a picture to get right to the extreme of the scale for me it either has to be exceptionally poor in all respects or exceptionally good. Which is why I rarely give 1s and (I think) only ever given one 10 :-)

I don't see how any of these are mocking the challenge.
And I give 1s when I see absolutely no relevance to the challenge (the point of the site is to take a good photo AND meet a challenge), or when it appears that there was absolutely no effort put into the photo.
I know a LOT of people put a LOT of thought and effort into their photos. A couple of 1s in over 200 votes really don't have that much of an effect. There's always going to be buttheads out there.

They dont mock the challenge, they mock me and my broken Coolpix. They flaunt their working cameras, they show images suggesting dead cameras, they point mockingly.
Or maybe I was saying that are some real nutters out there.
My typing is better now that I've got both arms free.

I have to agree with everyone else here... virtually every photo gets a handful of 1s no matter how good a shot it is. My guess is that some folks just don't know what the heck they're even doing... perhaps in their minds they're voting "1" because they think the shot should be "#1" in the challenge. It's certainly nothing to get bent out of shape about...
BTW, I usually find one, perhaps two shots worthy of a 1 in each challenge... and I always comment on them. |

I agree that it sucks, when you seem to have a decently executed photo, to get those 1s.
If you look at a lot of the lower scoring photos, right at the end of the heap, they often have 10s however.
I think it's just down to what people like. This is more of a popularity contest when it comes to the voting (at least for a goodly number of people) than it is some kind of "serious" photographic competition. And that comes across in the scores.
But, I keep hoping that if we complain often enough these people might get a clue. :-)
