FYI- Apple just released the 10.4.3 update for Tiger, and it includes support for additional camera RAW formats. I just imported a RAW file from my Canon 350D and it WORKS! Coincidentally, I ran the exact same test for a DPC member yesterday without success.

I'm assuming the support is in iPhoto?

Sorry, if my question is naive, but I'm a mac newbie.

I've been a mac user sice 1985, and I'm also a bit confused. I read all the update info, and I'll update when I get home to my mac, but I didn't see a mention of RAW in relation to the OS.

If its iPhoto, I understand why I'm in the dark since I removed it from all my macs.

I have played with iPhoto for doing some RAW conversions, but I'm more used to C1 and I generally like it better. However, I may have to give up C1 for a bit when I trash my PC and transition completely to Mac. If there's another option, I'm open to it.

The RAW support is in the finder, you can see the RAW files as thumbnails or as full size photos in Preview.

Spazmo, Aperture will be out in December...Good reason to trash C1 then...

Why give up C1? They have a mac version.

RAW support is part of the Core Graphics in OS X. When Apple adds support for a camera, that function applies to any application that uses Core Graphics: iPhoto, Image Capture, Aperture, Preview, etc.

Because iPhoto is basically free (for those who can't afford C1), and those who can will probably opt for Aperture.

They do, but being a cheap bastard, I use the LE version. There is an LE version for Mac, but the license is not cross-platform. So I would have to buy it again and while I like C1 a lot, I'm not sure the benefit C1 has over iPhoto justifies the cost.

And as for Aperture, well, see the above statement about being a cheap bastard and that explains my reluctance to spend $500. If it was $50 or even $100, maybe..

Perhaps it's time to finally sit down and work out a plan for how to make this photo stuff start paying for itself.
