Okay kids, it's between these two now! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

Going to try the Olympus E500 today though so that may be in the mix.

And what about the D50? BB has a 2 lens kit for sale- it's the camear, an 18-55mm lens and a 55-200mm lens.

The only difference I could find between the D70 and the D50 is the that ones uses a compact flash card, and the other uses a memory stick. Correct me if I'm wrong there lol.

I'm losing my mind lol.

The Olympus has the advantage that it has something in it that cleans the sensor. So no Spots due to dust.
I recently watched a pro use the Olympus, and was very impressed with the ease in the way the white balance was set, and the sensor cleaner :)
Its also 8 megapixel..like the xt is

lol yeah there's a lot of difference between the d50 and d70... //www.stevesdigicams.com -- look there.

If you want personal opinions, you're going to get swayed 100 different ways by 100 different people for 100 different reason..that's a surefire way to confuse yourself even more. Read Steve's site, trust what he says, and form your own opinion. When it comes down to it, go to the store, HOLD THE CAMERAS, and see what feels most comfortable IN YOUR HANDS. Then purchase the camera that you like best.

Which system do you like better? Both are intro level cameras that you are likely to upgrade from in a couple of years - which lenses do you have or want? Which upgrades (20D, 1D, 1Ds or D200, D2X) do you like better?

hrmm I don't agree with you there. There are plenty of pros shooting with one or more d70's out there still. Sure, the rebel is likely to need upgraded, but not so sure the d70 is a must.

You think any (pros) will be shooting with a D70 in 5 years? LOL

What I am saying is that we're going to change cameras - that's inevitable. But we probably won't normally change lens systems, etc. If you buy 5 Canon lenses worth $3500 and you buy a 20D to put them on, chances are high that you will upgrade that 20D within 5 years and not upgrade a one of those lenses. It's the system, not the camera.

Uhm...in 5 years, the 1d and the 1ds will be obsolete...as will the 20d and most likely the d200 and d2x...so yeah, that doesn't make any sense to me.

Besides, the d70 is more camera than the 20d is...so assuming that a pro will upgrade to the 20d in 5 years is absurd when saying a pro won't be shooting with a d70.

Geeze, don't get your panties in a bunch people. Didn't mean to start a camera debate lol.

I know there are going to be a lot of opinions. I want that though because I want to know how many people prefer which one. I have been to the stores and tried and held both - rebel and D70. I like them both. That's why i posted this.

I'm sorry I started a war lol.

The Canon XT is 90% of a 20D, but the small grip is uncomfortable for some people. Four out of the top five most popular cameras on DPC are Canon.

The Olympus E-500 offers the most bang for the buck (Dell recently had it for $634 with kit lens), offering 8 megapixels, a large LCD and a "self-cleaning" image sensor.

The Minolta 5D would be my choice of DSLR today if I couldn't afford a 20D and didn't care about future upgrades. Built-in image stabilization and a huge LCD are the highlights. Buydig has it for $759 with the 18-70 lens.

The Nikon D50 is perhaps the most capable of this group in terms of overall features, and in many ways it's even superior to the D70. You can get the body for $550 at digitalfotoclub.

So is the D50 good enough to do professional work with? I don't plan on doing anything professional right now, but would like to get into that eventually.

Sure. Plenty of professionals have used lesser cameras.

Any DSLR is capable of producing professional work. Your results will generally depend more upon your own abilities and the lenses you use than the camera itself.

Handle them all, and see which you like. The 350D would be off my list (no spot meter), but the E-500 seems to be very nice, it seems to have everything. (No delibrate firmware crippling)
Just go to the store with your own CF card and ask to handle them... that works best.

Just to note - I'm not camera warring. I said "which system" do you like better because we will ALL change cameras and our lenses won't really change.

Either is a good choice. ;)

From the Nikon cameras, the d50 has the lowest noise performance. Just throwing out another advantage of the little cam.
