I know there is already a current thread that has something to do with a flash meter (or light meter). But I have a more basic question. What IS a flash meter or light meter? What information does it give you, what kind of setup do you need to take advantage of what it gives you, and how many DPer's use one, routinely? Any information would help. Thanks!

its the same thing as your meter in the camera, except a lot more precise, and it has the ability to meter incident light as well as reflected light, whereas your in camera is just reflected light. it's a handheld device. I use one when I'm shooting med format film. On digi i just check my histogram on the lcd, but for film its pretty much indispensable, unless you have a digi with you too to test exposures. You dont wanna go through 50 polaroids tryin to get your exposure right. |

I own a flash meter...you can't trust the meter on your camera for studio photography using strobes because your camera doesn't know how many lights you have hooked up and how powerful they are, etc. They cannot communicate with the lights so you have to use a flash meter to measure what the correct exposure should be at a given shutter speed.
