I believe canon calls the AF mode that tracks moving targets and continually refocuses "AI servo mode." Is that right? Anyway...my question is, on the 20D, can you select this AF mode regardless of whatever mode you are in? Shutter priority, aperature priority, auto, etc? Thanks for any info...

20D Manual, page 64:
In the basic zone modes, the optimum AF mode is set automatically.
So...
You have to be on a-dep, m, av, tv, and P if you want to set AF mode.

OK, so I take it that that means in the "pre-programmed" modes, (sports, landscape, macro, etc.) that you don't get to pick your AF mode.
But, that in the "creative" modes, (shutter priority, apperature priority, program, etc.) that you CAN select the AI servo AF mode. Very cool...
Thanks!

I'd love to RTFM, but since I don't own one, I can't. Try reading my camera listed next to my name. :-)

I see dswebb beat me to it, though. |

Uusilehto, wouldn't the link to the online manual have been much more productive (and less controversial) if you had just posted that in the first place rather than "RTFM people."? But thanks, better late than never I guess... :-)

In sports mode on teh rebel asn 20D AIServo mode is kicked it.
If you install the hack on the rebel you can in sports mode shoot raw, and i think change the ISO (defualt is 400). YOu can now choose one shot or continuos, WB presets, The hack gives you the option in teh creative modes of AIFocus or One Shot..still no AIServo except in sports mode.
You can force AIServo in the creaive modes - if the camera senses subject movement (or you mvoe the camera to fake it) then AIServo kicks is.
also, on the 20D a 2.8 max ap lens allows the camera to use extra focusing sensors so focus is much more accurate, in AIServo or one-shot. |

RTFM wiki lol
love this quote from the wiki: "Critics would say that frequent users of the phrase (or similar sentiments) are simply expressing elitism, and that their attitude drives away newcomers without helping them. Their time could better be spent adding the question to a FAQ, pointing the user to a helpful website, or simply not responding"

I imagine that Prof Fate was referring to the 300D, on which the focus mode is not explicitly switchable to servo. In AI Focus mode, the camera focuses in one-shot mode, but switches to servo if movement is detected. There were loads of discussions of this on the DPReview forums, including the modifying of jackplugs and deliberately throwing off the focus to get the servo mode to kick in.
