| WHAT?!?! Is that allowed? It says here that they want to break apart from Canada. Would they form their own government, own military, etc? That's crazy! |

I dont know much on the issue but i think it'll be cool to have another country on the continent. If quebec can split from canada maybe the north east will be able to secede from the rest of the US, and california+oregan+washington can make their own country too. The world will be a much better place.

The last referendum on sovereignty was very close, 51% No.
It's quite the controversial issue.

Why would that make the world a better place? |

Yeah, but I think he meant that they would split off in addition to the northeast, making the US 3 separate countries. |

It was probably less close than that given that the Separatist government of the time threw away thousands of "no" votes. |

Many Quebecers have been pushing for a long time to be seen as a distinct society within Canada. It`s our only French-speaking province. All other provinces, with the exception of New Brunswick that`s bilibgual (English-French), are English-speaking majority. There are French-speaking Canadians all through the country, but they form a minority. Some in Quebec feel threatened by the rest of Canada. They are afraid that their culture and language will be assimilated into English Canada and that they will lose what they have now. By seperating themselves they believe that they will better protect themslves from this. There are also a bunch of political motivations involved (federal transfers, etc). The thing is, it seems that the seperatists want to secede from Canada all the while keeping all the perks. The would like to gain indepence all the while continuing to keep federally-funded health care, the military, the currency, etc. Some feel that secession would cause mass emigration and political strife. Others say that Quebec, with its mineral, timber and hydro-electric resources, would be better off on its own. Who knows?
A complicated situation for sure that an outsider like myself doesn`t fully comprehend, even though Quebec is my neighbour to the west.
All I know is that Quebec is a way cool province full of beautiful people (the girls!) and places that I hope will continue being part of Canada.

I think that Beagleboy has summed it up well.
Many years ago, former Prime Minister Trudeau tried his best to get all to live with a new Canada Constitution. Quebec refused to sign. Later, forme PM Mulroney tried to get all to sign again with his Meech Lake Accord. In that accord, it stated that Quebec was a distinct society and as such, had certain rights to protect that status. Now, the rest of Canada had a problem with the terminolgy of distinct society. The thinking is that while Quebec does have a certain distinctiveness, so do all of the other provinces in their own way. So why should Quebec have special priveleges under the constitution that are not shared by the other provinces and now 3 territories?
I think Quebec is a great place. I love how different it is from Ontario. But I also love how different Nova Scotia is, and Newfoundland , Alberta, B.C and all other parts of Canada. Maybe the solution is too claim that all provinces and territories are distinct societies and have rights to protect their distinction? I don't know, but I can't imagine have to drive though another country to get to another part of Canada.
One of the interesting arguements of separating is the national debt. If Quebec does leave, how the this debt be divided and settled? |
