Ok, finally gathering all this info from my thread "I need a good/cheap camera?" I have decided exactly what I want, I just need to know what my options are.
---------------------------------------
Here are the requirements:
at least 5 megapixel
optical zoom function
digital
manual apeture, shutter speed, and focus
focus and zoom to be done with rings on the lens barrel, NO MENUS!
no/little delay from the time I press the shutter button to when the picture actually takes
apeture/shutter speed jogwheel present, not flipping through menus on screen
non-SLR
------------------------------------
The model camera for this is the "Panasonic FZ30" I love the features but from what I have read, has HUGE problems with noise with different ISOs. I have seen some sample pictures and some look good and some dont. I am kind of pulled. Anyone want to back it up?
-----------------------------------
I would get an SLR if I could afford it, but I really cant right now. A memeber of these forums might be working a deal with me so I can get his cannon SLR.
So, thank you guys for the replys in advanced, I am just trying to get into this a lot before I spend a whole bunch of money and regret it. And if a camera has most of these features, post them too and I will look through it.
Thanks! |

You seem to want dslr features for p&s price. I'd be surprised if you find anything that fits your bill without some other major cons (crap sensor, crap glass, etc). |

just wondering why not SLR??
FZ30 is the only camera I know of as of know that fills in your specification range, although the noise problem you mentioned is an issue that can't be overlooked...
if you don't mind the manual focus using a button (just one click) than Canon G6 would work for you, it has jog dial for aperture and shutter speeds and amazing picture quality

Have you checked the Sony DSC-H1?
The zoom there is not done by your hand moving the lense, there's a button on the back, but it's pretty sensitive. It has manual settings as well as partially manual settings. 12x optical zoom...I can't recall the pixels, but I'm sure it's at least 5MP.
Focus can also be done manually....I don't really think there's too much that can't be done manually on this camera.
Retails about $450-500 right now. |

Yes the FZ30 has a fair amount of noise at higher ISO's, but really you have to understand that despite its features and looks its really a P&S. Compared to other 8MP P&S its noise is average, you can't compare it to a DSLR's noise, its apples and oranges.
From what you say you want the FZ30 is about the only thing I can think of that meets your requirements... |

Well it would be pretty much pointless without it being an slr, as you'd only have a crappy pixellated display to check focus on

The manual focus on the FZ30 works ok despite the EVF, when you turn the ring it enlarges a section of the display so you can fine tune your focus, basically an electronic focus screen.
I'd much prefer it had an optical viewfinder opposed to the EVF but its still not to bad... |
