Hi,
I don't have photoshop and I'm looking for some freeware that I can use to reduce noise. Can you suggest something?

That's a little harsh to say it does "lousy". For the internet size images, and for challenges here at dpc, it does OK; and in some cases very good, depending on the file. Just doesn't do well for large prints because the freeware version compresses the files quite a bit. The paid version gives options for how much compression you want use when you save the file.

This picture was taken at iso 800 on my Rebel Xt with noise reduction on the camera turned off
all images are 100% size
let me know if that helps

I've had better luck with Noise Ninja than NI. NI seems to take away more detail to get the same amount of noise remevoed. But this is just my experience. |

Thanks... That helps. I'm going to try both and see which works for me.
Would either of these work for reducing noise on scanned images ?

I'd suggest checking out this comparison. Of course that doesn't answer you original question, since I don't know about the free versions of these. I know this one is free, but I don't know if it's any good.
smjbmw, did you run both tools using the profile generated from this image, but otherwise all settings at default? I'm surprised that neither seems to do a great job on that image, NN not removing enough noise and NI doing too much smoothing.
For reference, I also tried both a year ago and ended up paying for NN. It was a close call, and I've been reasonably happy with NN. |

The free version of Neat Image compresses the heck out of the result so on some images (a lot that is) you'll trade noise for a lot of compression artifacts.
