Personally, I would go with two softboxes, but you can always upgrade an umbrella (which is inexpensive) to a softbox later.

I've tried a bunch of different trigger systems -- including the Paul C. Buff wired and wireless remote -- and I've since sold everything off and gone with PocketWizards. Nothing else came close to matching the reliability of the PW's (except direct-wire, but that was very inconvenient), and if you have a Rebel/D70/etc. you don't need any hot shoe adapter since PW's just mount in the hot-shoe. =] I would get frequent misfires with other wireless systems (like the cheap systems you see on eBay), or I'd have to deal with being attached by wire to yet another gizmo (like the PCB wired/wireless transmitters require). |

Yes, the remote trigger I have now for my lights is real cheap arse! It will only fire once, then I have to switch the camera off and on again for another shot etc....very inconvenient! |

It is just another type of lighting modifier. It is a large, round, bowl-shaped reflector, often favored by high-end fashion photographers who are working with "perfect" models. They can be used "bare" or with a diffuser over the front of them. The most popular brand is Mola, but they are not cheap. (If you are in Canada, you can rent a Mola from this place in Toronto, which also has pictures if you want to see what they look like.)
A nifty visual lighting modifier comparison tool is available here. The closet thing to a beauty dish is probably the "Softlight reflector" (which is 17.5"), while the Solofex 80 x 160 is equivalent to a 30" x 60" softbox.

Again, I may be wrong, I am new to strobes! |
No you can't use the on camera flash, as E-TTL always fires 2 times. The first time is a measured pulse to calculate the power necessary for a correct exposure, and the Second flash cooincides with the opened shutter. The First flash will fire the slaves, and when the actual photo is taken, they will have gone out and won't be recharged, so you will end up with dark pictures. |
