Starting this thread just to say Thank You to the voters for giving my dawn's early light a very pleasing 7.37; and me my first ribbon. I had pretty much convinced myself that I would never get one; and that it didn't really matter. Well, I'm here to tell you it feels really great to have your work affirmed by your peers in this manner. Two days later I am still somewhat overwhelmed.

I'd also like to point out that this shot was taken with the much-maligned kit lens. My opinion of it is rising, especially when you get away from it's widest apertures.

Just wanted to say Thank You, and that I really appreciate the community here at dpc.

Harvey,

I'm happy to see you ribboning at long last. I know it's not the most important thing to you, any more than it is to me, but it does feel good to have one under the belt doesn't it? Plus, that's an exceptionally nice score in an exceptionally topheavy challenge. WTG!

Its a great picture, and begs for further review. It has a almost surreal appeal to it, with the dark 5:30 AM skys. Keep up the good work!

In response to a question I received in a PM--

I download my images from CF card to computer using a card reader that's hooked up to a USB hub. The CF card shows up in "My Computer" as a removable drive which bears the camera's name when a card is in it's slot. I use Copy & Paste to make a copy of the DCIM file in the "My Pictures" directory. I rename the copy of the DCIM file with the date the shots were taken; and then clean it up by Copy & Pasteing the files from the numbered folders to the Date folder, then delete the numbered folders. Sounds more complicated than it really is. I am confident that the EXIF data is unaltered; and I don't erase the cards until I'm sure I have everything securely on my hard drive.

For images taken with the 20D I use Canon's EOS Viewer Utility for the first viewing, mostly because I can delete with only one click and not have to see the dumpers again. But any change to the file, even a simple 90 degree rotation, will alter the EXIF info, so be careful of any files you may want to enter in a challenge. For portrait-oriented shots I use Paint Shop Photo Album 4 to make rotated copies that are readable in EOS Viewer. I have another folder in "My Pictures" called "working" where I create copies of any image files I want to edit, usually with Paint Shop Pro 7.

This sounds like a lot of work but I have gotten used to doing it this way, and I am confident that if I mess up a file, or delete something accidentally, I can start over from a pure original. About once a month I cull the date folders again, put them all into one named for the month, and move it to an external hard drive.

I posted the steps I used to edit dawn's early light in the Photographer's Comments.

That's my method. Any questions or suggestions are welcome.

Harvey, while I'm thinking of it, how's the new lens treating you? Got any nice shots to share?

I like it a lot. It seems to be as sharp as my best Canon lenses. Only images I have posted so far are the three football shots in my portfolio. I'm doubt those show the lens to it's best as they were very low light and high ISO. It can do better. I've got one for Busy that I think does better by the lens. Haven't used the teleconverter yet.

Congrats coolhar, long overdue imo. BTW, I agree with your comments about the canon kit lens being much maligned. Your excellent image joins an excellent cadre of high scoring pics taken with that "cheap" lens, which is actually pretty good glass, especially in the hands of a good photog.

Keep up the quality work!
