Anyone had any experience with this camera? I don't see it listed here at DPC, have found reviews, all good but wondering if anyone has had any personal experience with this camera.
Thanks

Here it is - sorted under the "Powershot" line.
I can't speak specifically for the Pro1, but as a G5 owner, I can say I was very happy with it, and the Pro1 has definite advantages over that model.
It looks like the price on these is getting pretty reasonable. You can now get one for close to the the price I paid for my G5. I've mostly heard good things about it. Its pretty close to the highest level of capability you can get short of going DSLR, with a few competing models from the other manufacturers.
One thing to consider - with this price drop, and the fact its been out for a while (over a year and a half I think), Canon is probably getting ready to release a new version. This can be good or bad, and there's no right answer. If you're the type that will regret not having the latest, then you might want to wait a month or two. If your more interested in getting a tried model at a good price, the go for it. |

As I recall, when it came out and I was looking at it, the interesting things were:
1) Supposedly L quality lens (red band anyway)
2) Nice rotating display like the G2-G5
Bad side:
3) 8mp noisy sensor. The reviews of this and the other cameras using the same sensor were all "noisy". Of the group, only the Olympus was rated well.
Check out DPreview.com and steves-digicams.com, as I recall, both have detailed reviews.

Thanks, I have been reading the reviews and such and no, top of the line, newest toys do not matter to me, I'm the bargain shopper, second hand store, cheapest I can find shopper ;)
I'm putting together items I need for a studio, I got a new backdrop (muslin sheet 10' x 20') and blue/green screen backdrop, a softbox to start. I've been collecting props and such. Now I'm looking at a camera and would love to pay cash but that is not going to happen unless I have an unknown aunt die and leave me tons of money. I got a line of credit where I can get quite a bit of what I want/need to get this going. I want the next step up from where I am but not quite ready for the DSLR world, though I could probably get there very quickly, LOL :)
Anyone that actually owns one of these want to chime in?

I don't own one but I found one on sale for you. Dell is having a good sale that ends today.
Here is the link:
Canon Powershot at Dell
Here's another link with a coupon worth another $60 off the already $104.85 knocked off by Dell. So, the total price for the camera would be $534.15.

Thanks! I have that coupon saved!
Now, if you were going to set up a portable studio, besides the camera, lights, backdrop and props, what else would you get?
I'm talking something like a Santa Claus thing, where they can see, order and I can print out the orders before they leave or within a decent period of time.
Again, let's stick to Dell since they were the ones to give me this line of credit and I like what I've heard about them so far.

What other equipment? Laptop, printer, paper, extra batteries, how large a card? |

As you can see I have a Pro 1, and I really enjoy the camera.
What I like is the speed of the camera, minimal shutter lag, fast between shot times, and fast flash recharge time.
What bothers me is the lack of image stabilization with the 7x zoom, and the low ISO numbers for the sensor. You can't shoot beyond 200 ISO without alot of noise. Or do a 7x zoom during low light without a tripod.
One thing that the reviews don't tell you, is you need to use two hands at all times with this camera. To take the lens cap off, and work the zoom requires two hands.
Besides those issues, would I buy another ??? Maybe, but would be looking for something with a better sensor and stablization.
I have an extra battery, and 2 CF cards, 1 Gb ( 284 shots ) and 512 ( 140 shots )

I used it for a magazine shoot once. it's slow focusing, and the 28mm wide setting suffers from a lot of distortion. on the plus side, it's very sharp lens inside, that did pretty well in low light handheld. overall though, for the price, i wouldn't touch it.. i'd buy a rebel if I could find one for probably around the same $.

Since you're already a Finepix user, have you considered;
Finepix S5500 - 'Only' 4Mp, but you can buy it new for $280
or
FinePix S5200 - 5Mp, for about $360
I'm quoting prices from a quick search on Amazon. And no, I haven't tried these cameras myself, I'm just an obsessive reader of dpreview.com.... |

Thanks for the ideas! I like my Finepix, it was a gift from pcody but it's seen it's time and I am going to open my own photography studio and I'm ready to go to the next level. Plus I want something I can add a flash unit to later if needed.
I am also looking at the Rebel, but like I said, this is a line of credit, doubt Dell will be kind enough to drop their price, unless someone knows about a clearance page on there that I don't know about. You know the returned stuff? :)

Okay, here's one I've really been lusting over. The Finepix S9000. It's the latest 9Mp model from Fujifilm... And an excellent spec it is too. Just about everything you could imagine (including hot-shoe) with a 28-300mm lens, and twist-barrel zoom control!
About as close as you can get to dSLR ...
And on Dell's site, it's $594.15

Thank you! That is wonderful! Like I said, I'm not married to Finepix but that is sweet and the price is right!

I think it's worth considering a camera with IS. It can be a lifesaver.
The Canon S2 is a good choice.
Also, the Lumix line has quite a few options, and a great zoom and IS. You want to stay at low ISO with this one, but if you are mostly shooting outdoors or in good light you won't find a sharper camera. And the FZ5 in particular looks like it might fit the bill all around for you.
And look at how sharp and beautiful these samples look (see the review on DPReview for more details):

Those are some beautiful shots. I will be doing a lot of my shooting inside, especially this time of year so my tripod will get quite the work out. I'm going to go check those two out that you recommended right now, thanks!

I've had the Pro1 now for a year and half, the wife is shooting with it now and producing some outrageous shots. I can tell you about the 1.5x Teleconvertor and accessories. Personally I beleive it is the best quality pic that you will get out of a point and shoot, and there is plenty of in camera coolness (features), the menuing is easy. I would not touch the Wife's old Oly C5000 cause the menuing was so stupid to get anything done (I see most are like that).
Got to go to bed right now (it has been a long week...already) but tomorrow I will post three pics taken at the Miramar Airshow last weekend taken with a 20D/70-200mm (Me) 4L a 300D/70-200mm 4L (Mom) and the Powershot Pro1 (My Wife) and I bet most will not be able to finger the Pro1 shot... the camera hangs with the others but you have to grow into it.
ED: As Neil pointed out Noisy Sensor but that is only IS0 200 or greater, personally I never had to shoot it outside of ISO 50 or 100, for indoors I threw a Speedlite 420EX on there and all was well.
Also canon does state that it is "L" series glass and I would have to believe it, as is the TC... which is tack sharp at @ 320mm which it calculates to be (about)
My issue was shutter lag which you will have with any pea shooter that uses EVF (electronic view finder) remember camera has to draw the picture it sees on that LCD so you can look at it...so there is going to be a slight difference between what has and is happening. Planes fly by and you might miss em... but from the pics I post 2morro you will see the wife didn't have any problem with the lag.
