Sunsets are a dime a dozen, but occasionally something makes one special. Tonight I observed a sun pillar from my backyard. I've seen many before, this one was far from spectacular, but worth taking a few minutes to enjoy, and to snap a few shots.

..................
First shot................................A few minutes later, as it started to fade

These are quite common as the weather starts to turn cold, but I rarely have the camera with me on my way to work (which is when I usually see them, at sunrise).

More info on sun pillars here, here, and here.

Enjoy!

great sign that winter is close by. Good capture with wonderful colors. I've taken a few sunrises with pillars over lake michigan...it's butt cold out at that time.

Awesome! Simply put. I have only one series of sun pillar pictures. From beginning to end, but not with the colourful surrounding you have captured.

nice shots, I have only seen 1 and before I could get the camera it was gone.

But I have seen a light pilar at night and have a pic of that

Here is one I took last year at sunrise. It was about -10 with the windchill.
