I took this photo at a game on Saturday night and spent a little time in GIMP getting it to look the way it does here.

I'm really happy with it, it's not perfect but then again it's not posed for and I had to use the rink lights.

My biggest problem with the photo was that I couldn't lighten the face any more because the shirts are white and I would have loved to have got the face more of a feature. Also the other teams jerseys seem to be reflective.

Any tips out there for me please?

For the most part, the picture is pretty well composed. The main subject does look a little blurry...and there is quite a bit of grain in his face and even on his shirt. That's probably a result of you trying compensate for the low light situation. You could probably make him stand out a little more by adjusting the levels and you could even apply a 5-15% guassian blur to the whole image to smooth out the graininess (at least that's a trick I use once in a while). I don't particularly like the sepia tone...sports pictures, by nature, are exciting events...and taking the color away, takes away from the picture. Good job though. Hopefully that helps.

It's a nice capture. A few thoughts:

1) Why the cast to the B&W? I'm not saying it's bad, but what are you looking to add? Effects, to me, have their place, but should be reserved for serving a purpose. It isn't quite sepia, but this tone, to me, usually evokes a sense of nostalgia. Is this the sense you want to portray in this picture?

2) I don't think his face is too dark. You have some nice detail and shadow captured there.

3) Lots of people just say a photo should rarely be square. I'm not usually one of those...but...

Hope it helps. I do think it's a good photo overall.

The team colours are red and white and I was trying to play on that with those being the only colours there.

Thanks for your other feedback. I'm going for square right now though, I have no idea why but I'm cropping everything square.

I take on board what you mean with the sepia tones in sports photos. I might play around with the original and see what I can get with that. Thanks again.
