Anyone ever use one of these? I'm a bit apprehensive using one. I guess their is a real possibility of hurting yourself with one of these. What precautions would you take using this system?

I don't know about their portable system, but the Lumedyn is basically a gel cell battery. Some of the bigger systems use lead acid, like a car battery. As long as you avoid a dead short i don't see it being dangerous. Although on location yo never know...water and electricity don't mix well.

Are there any other choices that would be close to the capabilities of the ABs units?

There is the Tronix Explorer.

If you don't already own Alien Bees, then the DynaLite Uni400Jr with JackRabbit AC/DC monolight kit is an excellent product and very portable.
