I plan to buy a Nikon D50. I have a Vivitar 283 flash, and hope to be able to still use it, for off-camera illumination of portraits, etc.

How do I do this best?

Do I buy a separate slave unit, to trigger the Vivitar? Do I/can I use a cable? Do I need to buy a dedicated Nikon 600 or 800 Speedlight? I see that the D50 cannot be used as a command unit, to trigger a remote Speedlight, unlike with the Nikon D70s.

Any suggestions appreciated.

ya have a few options. I have a d70 and 3 vivitar 285's. You can fire your on camera flash from the d50 and put a light slave on your 283 to fire it.
You can get a wein safe sync, stick it on the hot shoe of your d50 and connect a pc cord from there to your flash, or you can buy quantum 4i's or pocket wizard radio slaves (the most expensive yet most reliable and convenient way).

wein peanut slaves are sufficient light slaves for indoor portriats and are just like $20 a piece. I woudln't worry bout the nikon flashes, unless you want all the shmancy ttl stuff n whatever. If your portraits are set up, you dont need it, cuz u have time to tweak your lighting.

Thats very helpful to me...thanks.
I think I'll just go with the Wein peanut slave then,.....they say it's effective up to 100ft. Even if thats a gross exaggeration, it would more than meet my needs here. Thanks again.
