I'm not very good at walking up to strangers and asking to take their pictures either, but have done it. If you really want a shot.....

I just realized that I didn't answer your question.
Candids are Candids. Sometimes you can stage something and draw out a Candid moment but that's hard to do.
My Rain entry was a Candid that I staged. I asked the guy if I could take his picture after he said "no problem" I figured out my angle and asked him questions about the weather...praying, PRAYING to to get this exact response...I kept looking up at the sky and asked the guy "...does it feel like rain, what do you think..does it feel like rain (as I held up my hand) he Candidly did exactly what I did (he looked up and held out his hand to feel for moisture)and I bursted away.
Now to answer your question. I ask people if I can take their picture and when they say yes, I hang for a moment....play with my lenses...take my time and let them get back into their flow and hopefully they'll ignore me and relax. Give them as many seconds as you can, to loosen up. Fire when they're off guard.
Outside of that...buy a VERY long lens... Pretend you're shooting at something else or that you're scouting out shots other than them and turn quickly in their direction and fire away. Then run like hell. |

There were lots of different answers and suggestions in this thread, but I think the best thing to do may very highly depends on your location... Around where I live (MA, USA) for example, people are very friendly and never mind being photographed, but in Egypt try to take a candid shot of a woman without (or with) permission and you're in big trouble.
So anyway, it may help this thread if you post your geographic location along with your comments. |

As far as sniping with a long lens, chances are that someone will see you and it makes you look like some kind of pervert. I suggest instead, a really wide lens. People see what you are doing, but have no idea they are in the frame.
