Ive looked through the manual about this, but am not too sure about the differences between the autofocus modes. Mainly I want to know what is AI Focus, and AI servo? When would i want to use either of these. I do alot of sport shooting, which would be the best?
Once again, thanks in advance |

Usually I stick to one shot for stactic objects. It lets me lock the focus and recompose -- something you *can't* do with the other two options.
AI Focus is good for shots where you have time to get a focus lock but the subject may be moving. Think kids. :-) (or anything else that is semi-static but likely to move before you take the shot)
AI Servo is good for shots where the subject is constantly moving. Think soccer players or any other sport.
With AI Servo, I push down half way on the shutter button and just hold it there. Whatever falls under the focus point hopefully has time to come into focus. If not ... it may actually come into focus (or better focus) while I'm shooting.
To me, the difference is that with AI Focus you pretty much want to get a lock before you push down all the way to take the picture. It's a one-time-lock, but then the camera is going to try to track whatever you locked onto...
But with AI Servo, it's going to try to track whatever is under your focus point for as long as you are holding the button down. While shooting soccer, unless the action has moved out of range of the camera, I just never let go. I'm always "on the trigger" and ready to finish pushing it the rest of the way down in order to take the shot. |

AI Focus is designed to have the camera automatically switch between Single shot, and AI servo.
A decent enough explanation of AI servo is here AI servo.
From what I've read in various places people seem to have issues with AI focus knowing when to switch between single shot and AI servo. However, ideally it would be used for circumstances where the subject is primarily still but may move.
AI servo on the other hand is basically for moving subjects only. It would want to hunt for something moving in a still subject, and try and predict it's position for when the shutter releases. Since nothing is moving in a still subject it hunts needlessly. |
