This is what I consider my best portrait I have taken yet. But I am very biased since this is my son, so I would like an objective opinion.
The expression on my son's face is priceless imho. Lighting is a bit on the flat side, but for a center portrait, I think it work. I would have like to play with flash placement, but kids don't stay still very long. For the whole photo session, my son's deepest desire was poking the camera lens :).

I actually like it a lot. The color and lighting to me is solid. The pose and "model" work to help convey emotion. My only complaint, and I am a overthetop proponent of this, is composition. I believe composition can make a average photo good, and a good photo memorable. Perhaps shifting him to the right or even beginnning to "cut" his head off of the right could add some dynamic angles. But the chin is already low and the hair adds to the character so here, it is really a left right deal. Good job.

Maybe something like this......

Nice capture! I like Cutter's alteration thou, agree with his comment on composition. I would also like to add that the bckground is a bit bland, certainly doesn't add anything to the picture, as for it taking away from the picture, that is subjective.

i'll have to agree that cutter's crop is the way to go. now print it, frame it, and stick on your wall...

edit - did anyone else notice that this thread was d70 heavy?

Thanks eveyone. My problem is that I always zoom in too much. The photo I posted is original, no crop. I often end up with not much cropping options. I have no room to crop vertically; the chin is already near the frame. However, I haven't thought of cropping like Cutter did; I like it very much I must say.

I think it's very nice too, he has a very serious look on him almost. I think if you were going for this look, it would look good in black and white with a high pass and some dodging and burning.

yea I think that the black/white version takes away the background problem.

If I had wanted to get that look, I would never have been able to. With kids, the only way it work for me is to shoot untill the card is full.
That's a very interesting take on my photo Joey. Your are definately not afraid to push the post processing; something I am not used to do. I really need to experiment more extreme ps approach.
