55-200mm or 70/75-300mm?
Any suggestions on which? I shoot mostly outdoor stuff, proably a little nature... and some portraits.
Any input would help!

Which lenses are you talking about?
I'm assuming that you are refering to the Canon 55-200 USM II vs Canon 75-300?? Are you also considering other makers as well?
I have the 55-200 and have had the Sigma APO 70-300, and tried out the Canon 75-300. Out of those choices, if you are doing animals/nature, I'd recommend the Sigma 70-300. Probably the nicest consumer grade tele zoom. The Canon focuses a lot faster but it's also a bit shorter. 200mm is too short for animals/nature. The Canon 75-300 gets really soft past 200, so it defeats the purpose of getting a long telezoom if you plan on shooting a lot around 300mm.

I have the Sigma 70-300 4-5.6 APO Super Macro 2 (the newest version adds DG to its title). Great lens, even greater value.
Compared to the 55-200, the sigma will run you about $10 more, give you 100mm more zoom, slightly larger aperture at a given zoom, and macro capabillity. The optical results will be the same or perhaps better on the Sigma. The USM should be a bit faster focusing.
The canon 75-300 is a very so-so lens. The Sigma is better.
IF you are talking about this lens then you are in a different ball park price wise. Except for the IS, I am not sure this is a better choice than the Sigma optically, and it costs twice as much. (to save you a click, the Canon 75-300 4-5.6 IS USM at $440) |
