Just out of curiosity... for my own sense of well being,,, etc.
Someone takes a picture of a pile of dog s*** with grain... they get what?
just want to get a better handle on your grading system... LOL

I find some challenges not to be to my liking, so I don't enter them: it is a bit easier on the mental state than the alternative. Try that next time:)

There's the addition of grain just to meet the challenge description. And then there's the images where grain was used to set a mood or someway add character to the image be it by shooting at high ISO or by adding via software or a combination of both. The latter is what this challenge is all about.

There are some very good images in this challenge and I commend those who chose to attempt it in color since IMO grain in color is harder to make look like it belongs than it is on a B & W or sepia image especially with digital.

You are right...I should back off on a few Challenges... and I wasn't mad at all...really..BUT...even though ONES are part of the scale...and the fact that it is an Advanced Challenge, dictates...an opportunity to do what pretty much one wishes in regards to Grain...amount and the look of ones Photo,(selective or not).... I will live with the score dealt my Photo... (always have)...and have fun with this Site... seems to me some voters just seem to be a hard sail on a windless night......lol.... "Peace"...Thanks for the ear everyone and on to Light on White II... ;)

Well, that entirely depends on the composition, lighting, and whether grain was just added, or if it improves the "message" of the dog poopy. :)

You know ... you just have to laugh at yourself. LOL

My score on this one is way higher than I anticipated, while my score on Delicate is way lower than I think it deserves... open challenges are harsh! I'm in the mid-high 5s on this, and I was really expecting 4.5ish - hooray nice member people!

Dear lord, please let me break a five at least. Oh well, my delicate photo is doing well over 6, so I'm still happy. At least I didn't get another DQ...haha

the voting has slowed down on this challenge. Not many votes received today and no comments
10/27/2005 07:14:07 AM · #190
After 11 comments relating very similar language "no image grain" I must conclude that my attempt to provide it was lacking. The photo was received well, just not in relation to the criteria of the challenge. I sincerly appreciate every comment.

hmm not many high scores posted on this thread. Looks like dpc voters don't like grain in images even if the challenge demands :>

This is certainly helping me stomach my Light on White score. I'd feel pretty good about my chances for a Top 10 with a 6.5, so a little climbing is required.

The voting really has slowed down like gaurawa said. I think I got 4 votes all day yesterday.

Just wanted to comment there are some wonderful shots in this challenge. Better than I expected with the subject of the challenge.

Apparently quite a bit. My wife (Shrew) recently submitted a photo which met the challenge and I thought (though I admit a certain bias) was technically ok (not perfect but ok) and got a comment explaining why the commenter had rated the photo a 3 or less. Apparently the subject matter (dying flowers) depressed him/her and was the basis for the low score. I was tempted to respond on Shrew's behalf that art (yes I will call it art though I will grant that neither Shrew or I are "artists") should provoke a reaction whether it is pleasure, disgust or a range of emotions in between. My position is that if you get a reaction you have communicated a message (hopefully the message you intended to convey) and the score should reflect that. A lack of emotional response, lets call it indifference, would seem to me to be a legitimate reason to give a low score because the photo just doesn't "speak to you" and has obviously missed the point with the person giving the grade.

If the person who left the comment is reading this, I hope they understand that I do not quarrel with the score given. This is a competition which directly reflects our individual likes or dislikes so if he/she gave a low score because they didn't like the photo, that's just part of the game and we all have to deal with it.

There, I feel better now. No need for my meds today. :-)

Almost forgot -

right about where I thought I'd be at this point... hoping to end up mid-5's.

10/27/2005 05:11:40 PM · #200
Okay, I only need:
three 10's
three 9's
five 8's
or nine 7's

to get to a six. (I need to get a life is what I need.)
