So, I opened my camera bag last night (zippered shut, hasnt been touched since I cleaned it last, using the same method I always have), and it stank! It was horrible. I searched through my bag for the source of the smell (a dead animal maybe?). And when I touched my 50mm lens, it was slimy. I popped off the cap and look what I found on the UV filter...

There is now some kind of liquid throughout the lens. Its rather digesting.
So basically, I write this post to ask the question.
WHAT IS THIS
Thank you very much,
Maxwell

its a canon filter, granted a cheap canon filter, but its not a freebie either.
Would damage from nold on the filter becovered under the warrenty?
(both lens and filter less than a year old) |

My guess is that it's a humidity problem, not a defect in the filter. |

ugh.
well, any ideas on how to start cleannig this up? or am i out a UV filter?
also, the lens itself has some of this green goo as well, and I need that for a shoot next week.
Lysol? Alcohol? soap and water (lame)? |

An update for anyone interested......
It appears the goo is seeping out of the 50mm lens itself. Some kind of motor lubricant maybe? But why does it smell so bad?
anyone have any clue what is going on before i call Canon tomorrow? |

I think you should call Canon immediatly. Not a big deal if there's some goo on your filter but if the problem is your lens!
