Funny...I'm looking at my B.O.B. submission on a computer other than my own right now (for the first time) and it looks like hell. Can barely make out the image, it's so much darker than on my own.
I have 10 votes so far with a 4.3 avg score...guess prople's monitors are more like this one than mine.
Damn. |

I found the same thing with my weather image, I rekon when you DL the pic it gets darker, for that reason I lighten my shots a little more than normal so that when they are displayed they look right...
Weird heh!! |

Same here, on my monitor it was dark, but that was the mood I was trying to convey. I had many others that were lighter, but I didn't use them. I looked at the picture on my husbands computer and it was pitch black. Guess I will mark it down as lessons learned, because my shot is in the gutter!

It's black on black! It SHOULD be a bit dark! lol Although I am sitting at 5.1 right now with what I consider a good shot... *shrug*

Doesn't get darker when you upload...moving an image doesn't change its properties. It's best to calibrate your monitor properly and then submit.

Hey Pedro, I took your advice and spot edited just so I wouldn't miss the opportunity--and I'm headed for my lowest score ever! So it worked! |

... this topic makes me think of a suggestion to DPC:
What about creating 1 (or a few more) image(s) in a specific section called MONITOR CALIBRATION.
For instance, there could be multiple versions of the same image, in darker tones and lighter tones. But one version would be called "reference picture" and the others "2 stops darker, 1 stop darker, 1 stop lighter, 2 stops lighter". At a glance, you can then easylly calibrate your monitor for the best view on the reference picture, while seeing the calibration's effect on the brighter and darker versions.
This way, when we prepare our image for DPC, we'd be calibrated the same.
Just a thought.

The problem is not always with your own monitor though, it can be with every one elses also. (I hope)

Most of them look really good. I was surprised. I think that some photos are to dark. I can barely make them out..but it is not my monitor. I fixed mine months ago.
I think that it should manditory to fix your monitor before voting!!

I would like to know what you think is a low-key photo and the difference between a b/w photo. I think that most everyone did an excellent job on there pictures. The others forgot to look up what low-key is.

fix it how? on the calibration under the pics for voting mine is almost perfect.
Yup mine is the worst ever too, but al least I know why. It is pitch black to almost everyone (smacks head) Should have listened to the five year old and pick a different one.

I cant seem to find balance with most images. I've adjusted My screen to make one persons pop out and ruined the next. My entry is at 4.0 and when I look at mine after adjusting for some of the others...It breaks my heart....Had my portrait pulled for being to artistic now I face this mess:( |

I have voted already on the BOB shots... I thought there were a lot that were great also..
Maybe for the people that do not understand these photo terms there should be a tutorial they must read before submitting any votes :) :)
JK!!
I liked them though!! |

I thought that these were very interesting, well done shots! I didn't give any scores lower than a 4, and there were very few of those. But it sounds like a lot of us are getting low, low scores. I figured that even if mine's a little boring, folks might give it a 5 or 6, but I think dacrazyrn is right--there have to be folks giving 1s and 2s like it's a fad!
Maybe it's just us whiners in the forums! |

I am meaning that many look like they are in black and white, and any that have color in them are being voted down because of it. There are a ton of great shots in there and I think I handed out mainly 5-7's
Low key to me is low illumination (ie more of a dull lighting situation), which can have long shadows and total areas of blackness that obscure parts of the intended subject. Early, early morning and late evening light are kind of the idea I get for the "brightness" of the light, etc.. example

I see quite a few low key shots, but not that many actual Black on Black shots. I had taken it as we were suposed to combine the 2. Black on black with low key technique used. I don't think I'll be voting this round. |

This is one of my worst ever so far: 20 votes at about 4.9. So what if there's a little color in it. I have a feeling when I vote tomorrow, I'll be very critical. :) |

I know my new LCD monitor is way brighter than any I've ever used, and I suspect that is my problem. If I lightened it up any I got all sorts of pixely crap going on.
Oh well...at least the stock market has been going up...unlike my scores.

Now, now...don't be talkin' smack. the only votes so far are those like us with nothing better to do in the wee hours of the morning than this. Maybe once people with lives get into the action, we'll see the effects of their generally nicer dispositions. |

LOL, you may be right on this... As for me it's lights out for now. Good luck to all, and may the best man (or women) prevail. :p |
