Astrophotography - all shots that focus on astronomical bodies (stars, planets, moon, galaxies, etc) and move the appropriate shots from 'Sky' into this category. I for one love these images and it would be great to have a place to find them and post them.

Thanks for listening!

While I'd love to see it too, there are probably only a handful of people here who have ever shot anything other than the moon. An Astrophoto gallery would be full of hundreds of moon shots and a few other scattered stuff. Still, if you build it, I will come...

Astrophotography has been someting I've wanted to get into for some time now, but I live in a very light polluted city and haven't invested in any equipment. That will change sometimes next year, as I plan a move. I've shot star trail shots for years, but would like to shoot some star tracking shots. Has anyone tried the Min-EQ Tabletop Equatorial Mount? It looks like a good and inexpensive way to get started.

Oops, sorry for hijacking the thread, I'm all for an Astrophotogrphy Gallery also.

I have a friend who has that tabletop Orion EQ mount and he's never successfully used it, though he hasn't tried REAL hard after the initial frustration. In general, beware of something that is priced so low. With your D70 and choice of lenses, it may tax the mount's ability to hold your camera stable, not to mention the frustration of polar aligning something so small. I'd wait for a better option.

Kirbic has a nice portable EQ mount that he takes with him to dark sky sites. Rattle his cage and see if he'll post here.

I also very much like the idea. The community of active (or even quiescent) astrophotographers here is pretty small, but, IMO, giving it a space of its own may encourage more activity. This is such a challenging and rewarding area that I think could very much use additional exposure, pardon the pun.

I think its a great idea... it solves the problem of finding photos that are taken by DPCers other than Kirbic's gorgeous photos

Astrophotography has been added to the list:

//www.dpchallenge.com/photo_gallery.php?GALLERY_ID=43

People are going to have to update their own images to move them from Sky to Astrophotography. Unless someone is interested in compiling a list of IDs that need to move. :)

SAH-WEET!

Thanks for the encouragment everyone (and the gallery admins!!)... Now, I suppose I gotta show what little I've done as well. I'm a newbie in it but I think this will be a great way for those with more expertise to help those of us just starting out to get into it.

Thanks!!!

oh man thanks for posting this little goodie. I have been looking for it to show some people who are interested in wide field shots, but dont want a telescope mount.

So, what power magnification does it take for a shot of the Moon to qualify as "astro"?

Clearly qualifies while...

probably doesn't (though it's there anyway, for now). While the moon is a very important element, it's clearly intended to be a landscape. My guess is that anyone who takes any shot of the moon will include it in this gallery, just because.

Thanks for the examples. This is kind-of inverted astro-photography, but I highly recommend Earth Observatory at NASA -- they are always posting superb satellite and astronaut-taken images of interesting phenomena. This week we have a volcanic eruption in the Galapagos, a typhoon off Vietnam, landslides in Pakistan, and more ... links to more image galleries at the bottom.
