sorry if this was covered in any other threads.....

This week's contest GRAIN.

What is the SC's (and everyone else's) opinion on the use of photoshop's "Add Noise" filter??

Presumably if the subject of the thread is Grain and someone adds grain via post-shot manipulation does this count as "adding a major feature" and thus disqualifiable??

Adding noise has always been allowed in basic as long as it was applied to the whole image, and same in advanced, so long as so much isn't added to literally hide any major elements, but by then it probably would look like crap.

yeah I know the filter is legal in itself but my point is that adding grain is surely a major part of the image given the title of the contest, would it therefore fail on the adding major element rule rather than illegal filter rule.

Nah, I don't think so, if only because that would put all the dSLR people flat out of luck; My camera at ISO 3200 has less noise than my P&S did at ISO 100...

I think most of us will add grain to our entry, after resizing the pic to 640 pixels most camera grain becomes almost invisible. I added quite a bit of grain to my entry after resizing...

My 300D gave me just enough grain at ISO 1600 (with a couple of rounds of USM to enhance the grain).

In the past we have ruled that the challenge topic is not a factor when determining whether something is a major element. Also, in my opinion, disallowing "add noise" in the grain challenge would be somewhat akin to disallowing "desaturate" in a black and white challenge.

While this is just me talking and not an official ruling, I am quite confident that we will not be disqualifying use of "add noise" or similar tools on the basis of the Major Elements rule.

I'd certainly agree with CJ, we will not consider the noise a major element in light of the challenge description. The "add noise" filter is going to figure prominently in the processing of many entries for this challenge, and it would be disingenuous to offer a "grain" challenge, then disallow something that has been specifically allowed in the past.
