Perhaps this suggestion has been made before and if so I apologize for the repeat (perhaps someone could tell me the resolution if it has been mentioned before)...

I'm new to the site and have only entered my second challenge, but it seems that having so many entries into a challenge is a bit overwhelming to try to vote on 20% of. I know I have fallen into the habit of just getting the 20% done so the votes count and don't spend the time to really critique a photograph well. In addition, I enjoy making comments as it does indeed hone my own skills, but there's a lot of entries in these challenges to wade through.

I have two suggestions on this:
1) Have more challenges available to enter. Still only allow one entry per week, but with more options there are fewer submissions in the challenges and this makes voting much easier and more meaningful as more time can be spent on critiquing.

2) If more challenges were added and the number of entries lessened, perhaps the voting system could be modified so that instead of their needing to be 20% voted upon for the votes to count, that there need to be comments made on a certain percentage (maybe 10%) of the entries for the votes to count... This encouraging more comments, as most seem to desire, helping us become better critiquers, and keeping some that just want receive from the site and not give back to it, off the site (and I speak about myself here - it will keep us accountable to stay involved). Might it be possible to even to put a stipulation that comments made need to be found helpful by those receiving them for the votes to count (eliminating some of the "Great Shot" and "I don't get it" comments that are really not helpful).

Hope this makes senseâ€Â¦ I am a newbie so feel free to flame-away!

(Oh, and a side note on comments – don’t get so offended if someone makes a suggestion for improvement of your shot that seems ‘beneath you’. Good grief, someone took the time to actually comment on your photograph – thank them and be humble enough to actually consider what they are saying. If you did something for a reason let them know – but do it lovinglyâ€Â¦ YOU might be the one making a comment ‘beneath’ someone else one day, think about how you would like to be treated) Ok, stepping of soapbox nowâ€Â¦

Hehehe, yes, this is an age old issue :-)
It was just in september that the second open challenge each week was started. Before then, only 1, and there had been several challenges with over 500, even 600 plus entries.

Oh, that I did not know. Still doesn't eliminate the problem I see... but does give me more reason to become a member - Wonder if it could be a business write-off.

Hmm...

If you're a professional photographer, sure it can.

If you think we have too many entries now, you should have seen it when you had only ONE challenge to choose from as a non-paid member, that was some big numbers sometimes. I like having two to choose from (except when I was shooting for the delicate challenge and got one that may work in the light on white...now I'm all confused as to what to do...augh)
