I agree. It's interesting, but... I don't think it would do all that well on a challenge.

That is why I feel the elephant and bird/lake picture are better. They invite you in, not because it is "artistic" and force you to find something, but because there is reality and beauty that needs to be absorbed. You can stay awile and feel the place. Isn't that what photographs do, make the viewer live in that time/place?

That's certainly ONE thing photographs can do, and that's certainly a valid personal choice for you to make. But, interestingly enough, the winning photo, for me, fulfills one of your criteria in spades; it makes me "live in that time/place. I can FEEL the panic of the starlings, the aggression of the falcon, and I can feel an inkling of what it must be like to be in that flock, wheeling in mindless panic to escape this meance in the skies.

I'm not particularly thrilled by some of the winning shots to be honest (in particular the mating toad, which is just an average image - at least in the resized state). The winner, on the other hand, certainly holds the viewers interest. It's a unique photo.

I'm also kind of partial to the snapper shot for its glossy, colourful, mass appeal.
