I just downloaded Neat Image (just the freebie) just to try it since I've never used is. I have one quick question, is it normal for NI to reduce the size of your file considerably? For instance, my file was 105 KB but when I saved it using the NI free default it reduced it to 45 KB? Does this sound right? And how would that work with challenge shots reducing it by that much, does it affect the quality to have that small a file? Sorry, but this kind of stuff just makes my head hurt!

Thanks!

it's normal because it is reducing details in the image...

The "freebie" NI will only save on something like jpeg "medium" quality. Therefore the size goes down (typically). If you register the software, you can chose the quailty of jpg that it saves. Or save as bmp or tiff also.

This sounds like you are starting out with a small JPEG to start with.

You should be running noise-reduction on a TIFF image, preferably the full-sized version.

I use a program called PictureCooler (PC only) which can save in TIFF or BMP formats, and is free. If you're just starting out, it's worth comparing to NeatImage or Noise Ninja.

Regarding PictureCooler, yes it is free, but unless you register it there's a grid overlayed on the final saved image. How is this acceptable?

Then it must be a free registration, because I use it often with no problems and I know I didn't pay anything, unless that's a new "feature."

You must be using an older version of the program then. I just double checked and registration is $25.

try noiseware community edition from imagenomic. free to use and saves at a much lower level of compression. noiseware

Thanks everybody for the info - the first time I used the NI I did start with a small JPEG. I just now started with a much larger file (TIFF or PSD, can't remember) and it saved it at a more acceptable size. I saved the exact file without the NI using Save for Web also and it is only a tiny bit bigger so now I feel better. It's great to know I can come here with my "stupid questions".
