I was wondering how you can take a simple object place it in the photo and know exactly where to put it so it "makes" the image. I find myself taking photos of certain things but the placement always seems off. sometimes i think i may crop too much or not crop the image correctly. I've taken some shots with my new camera but they just dont show impact. i'm slowly learning some things about photoshop, i finally know how to use layers, as you can see from my overprocessed and illegal Spook photo.

I have an idea for the Grain challenge. I will be using my tri-pod, i have my subject, but how do i know where to place the subject? i know about rule of thirds, but i want to be able to photograph something and know ahead of time the angle or position to use. i hope you understand.

i'm no expert but it all depends on what you're shooting... yes rule of thirds generally works, but some subjects look better centered. depth of field is also equally important. also try to use diagonal lines leading into or out of the photo when possible. your goal should be to suck the viewer in and keep them looking at the image. just experiment with different placements and decide which location in the frame makes it the most interesting.

take several shots form different angles.
regardless, it will be a matter of opinoin as to what looks best. Some like lots of negative space, but at times to me it looks a bit contrived. Leading lines, rule of thrds, DOF can also be used, as can lighting (shadows, or a 'spot' light etc) to focus attention, or you can use color (by design or selective desat).

If you can 'draw teh viewers eye' thru the image - create a path for them to follow that tells a story.

yeah, easy to say, not so easy to acccomplish.
