It's my feeling that grain is an ADDED thing. I mean, wouldn't it be an effect used to inhance something? Not wanting to stir things up, but that's how I look at it at least.

Darn - no grain.
Guess I gotta' bump to ISO1600 AND add some...

Well there's always the D600L I could brush the dust off...

I thought noise was from high ISO settings, and GRAIN was a post editing procedure. Either way....Im all Grained up and ready to get Gritty. :)

It's not worth worrying about IMO. At least from a results perspective. The images that use grain effectively are almost certainly gonna percolate to the top here, I bet. I could be wrong. If anyone's looking for effective use of noise, btw, check out Joey Lawrence's portfolio for one approach.

I love that but I don't really think it "needs" grain, but I guess no photo really does. But again, if you converted it to sepia and added grain, then it might look like an old ball field, or something from a previous area. That's my point - grain can be ADDED to inhance the mood. Ok, I'll shut up now.

If you want to see visible noise from that camera, you need 3200, not 1600. Extended range. nd even then it'll be less than your D600L. jejejeĆ¢„Ā¢

So the timing of this challenge is pretty interesting to me, as I am taking some photography classes (just for fun) and we JUST finished a class on "film". Now having been into digital photography for the past 5 years, I would have thought this class to be pretty boring, but it actually provided some interesting info relavant to how current DSLR try to mimic traditional film cameras and how "pushing" film can be emulated in PS, etc...

Anyway, grain (in the traditional sense) is not an "added" thing, but is actually related to the silver halide crystals used in the film emulsion. Some crystal sizes/forms were "grainier" than others, thus photographers would chose different film stock depending on the type of image they wanted to create.

I don't think anyone was arguing that point. [/quote]

Actually I thought I would mention it. Because many new photographers dont know that this is the case. So there! :-)

seems like my camera only goes to 1600 :( there's visible noise but when cropped and resized, the noise virtually disappears :( sigh!

In custom functions on the menu you can enable a shift into ISO 3200. I forget offhand which CF it is, but it's not hard to find. They keep it hidden 'cuz it's really quite noisy (for a 20D anyway) and people who used it unawares might bitch about sensor quality. That's my theory anyway.

On the 10D it's under the menu and then ISO Expansion (on and off)and not under the custom funtions. They may have changed it on the 20D though.

Well, I'm in on this one. This will be my first Member challenge. :-)

I love the freedom of the editing rules in the Member challenges. Lord know, my pics need all the help they can get. :-D

Good luck to all!

Dumb question of the day: I have a shot that looks good with the grain, but it really isn't integral to the shot. The grain helps the picture, if you ask me. Will that get voted down?

IMHO, if it helps the photo then I wouldn't vote it down.

OK Rikki, I'm going with it. If it tanks, I'm blaming you. ;-)

Heheheh sure Marc :) I'm submitting an image as well. Not quite certain if it's integral to the image either. But it helps it IMHO. No better way to find out right? If it does poorly, at least it won't show in my top 6 highest rated photos. I would like to get rid of that Affluence image in my top 6 and I think I'll be one step closer with my Reflections entry. Although I doubt my Grain image will break a 6. We'll see :)

Ok, I know lots have done it, but I am now wondering: Is adding grain in the shot via post processing still legal in advanced editing? Isn't that considered rendering pixels?
